Location: Oxford, MD
Key Duties and Responsibilities- Assist in the installation, removal, and maintenance of masts, booms, and other spars.
- Install and troubleshoot standing rigging (the wires that support the mast) and running rigging (the ropes that control sails).
- Help with splicing ropes, fabricating custom components, and maintaining hardware.
- Learn to inspect and diagnose issues with the rigging, sails, and other marine systems.
- Learn to use specialized tools and equipment, including those for working at height on masts.
- Physical ability: Must be able to lift 50+ pounds, stand for long periods, climb, and work in various weather conditions and heights.
- Technical aptitude: Knowledge of basic hand tools and ability to learn and follow technical instructions.
- Problem‑solving: An aptitude for hands‑on problem‑solving is essential.
- Teamwork: Must be able to work effectively with and assist experienced crew members and yard staff.
- Knowledge: Familiarity with boats or a marina environment.
- Apprentices will receive on‑the‑job training, shadowing experienced riggers to learn essential skills.
- The role provides the opportunity to earn while learning, with the goal of advancing to a full rigger position.
- The apprenticeship may also involve exposure to other marine skills, depending on the specific program.
