PositionThe Prince George’s County Department of Permitting, Inspections & Enforcement (DPIE) is currently seeking qualified applicants to fill a Fire Engineer Reviewer III (Engineer Reviewer 3G) grade G29 position in the Building Plan Review Division.
About The PositionThis is a senior‑level professional engineer reviewer position that involves analyzing and reviewing construction documents and plans, applying basic engineering principles in all phases of plan review, and enforcing County and National Codes, with an emphasis on fire and life safety plan review for residential and commercial buildings. Work requires sound, independent professional judgment and responsibility to perform technical plan reviews under the general supervision of a higher‑level engineer position.
AboutThe Agency
The Department of Permitting, Inspections and Enforcement (DPIE) is responsible for coordinating and enforcing standards that control what goes on before, during, and after construction. Staff from nine agencies work cooperatively on permit processing, business licensing, plan review, inspection and enforcement. The mission is to promote economic development in Prince George's County and protect the safety of County residents, businesses, and visitors through efficient permitting, inspection, and licensing services to ensure compliance with established building, zoning and property standards codes.
Examplesof Work
- Review plans and documents to determine if the project complies with guidelines for fire and life safety, including standards, local and national codes, and regulations such as ICC, NFPA, and the State Fire Code.
- Thoroughly and competently review fire‑protection systems shop drawings that encompass a broad scope and complexity for compliance with all jurisdictional codes.
- Perform engineering calculations to determine design adequacy and defend these findings against engineers, architects, and fire‑protection system designers as necessary.
- Conduct research on technical literature, codes, and standards when assigned.
- Visit worksites to conduct field investigations, surveys, or monitor construction when assigned.
- Prepare code interpretations, code modification resolutions, reports, and other correspondence of an important nature for the supervisor, section head, and/or Associate Director when assigned.
- Attend meetings, clarify, interpret, and answer technical questions regarding fire protection to professional engineers, architects, builders, and the general public.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in the engineering or related scientific field determined by the requirements of the position (e.g., civil, environmental, architectural, mechanical, fire protection, or industrial).
- At least three (3) years of professional plans‑review work.
- Seven (7) years of professional experience in construction, electrical, mechanical, or fire prevention work which includes three (3) years of professional plans‑review work.
- ICC or NFPA fire plan review certification.
- Engineer in training.
- Professional Engineer.
- Fire Protection Engineering.
