Overview
The Northern Recreation & Leisure Services Division is seeking a Martial Arts Instructor at the Department of Parks and Recreation, Prince George’s County, Glenn Dale Community Center. We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Martial Arts Instructor to join our team and make a positive impact on students of all ages.
Responsibilities- Teach safe, engaging, and age-appropriate martial arts classes
- Instruct students in proper techniques, forms, self-defense, and conditioning
- Foster a positive, respectful, and encouraging learning environment
- Promote discipline, focus, confidence, and personal growth
- Adapt instruction to meet the needs of students at various skill levels
- Monitor student progress and provide constructive feedback
- Support school events, testing, and demonstrations as needed
Required
- Current rank or certification in your martial art
- CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain)
Preferred
- Current rank or certification in your martial art
- CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain)
- Experience teaching group classes
Skills and Abilities
- Strong understanding of martial arts techniques, forms/kata, drills, and self-defense principles
- Knowledge of belt/rank curriculum and progression standards
- Understanding of martial arts philosophy, discipline, and etiquette
- Familiarity with age-appropriate training methods for children, teens, and adults
- Knowledge of safety protocols, injury prevention, and proper equipment use
- Ability to demonstrate techniques clearly and correctly
- Skill in teaching proper stance, balance, timing, and coordination
- Ability to break down complex movements into understandable steps
- Classroom and group management skills
- Effective verbal and non-verbal communication
- Ability to motivate, encourage, and correct students constructively
May be subject to medical, drug and alcohol testing.
Work HoursEvenings after 7 pm
Working Conditions/Environment- Instruction takes place in a multipurpose room of a community facility
- Work is physically active and requires standing, moving, demonstrating techniques, and participating in drills
- Classes may include children, teens, at varying skill levels
- Instructor works in a structured, disciplined, and respectful training environment
- Use of mats, training equipment, protective gear, and instructional aids is required
- Environment emphasizes safety, proper technique, and injury prevention
- Lighting, space, and mat setup must support safe movement and visibility
- Schedule may include evenings
- Interaction with students, parents, staff is frequent
- Noise levels may be elevated due to instruction, group responses, or training activities
- Employment is contingent upon a favorable background check
- Employment is contingent upon a favorable fingerprint check
