Overview

UMMS Capital Region, a member of UMMS, is looking for an Advanced Practice Practitioner, Acute Care Surgery/Trauma to meet increasing clinical demand at UM Capital Region Medical in Largo, MD, in a state-of-the-art facility.
Under the direction of a supervising physician, the APP provides diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventive health care services to patients, obtains medical histories, examines patients, orders and interprets tests, makes initial diagnoses, and orders treatments. The APP administers therapeutic procedures (such as suturing, chest tube placement, central/peripheral line placement, and wound care), counsels patients, and assists with surgical procedures. The Acute Care Emergency Surgery APP covers trauma and general surgery and is responsible for comprehensive, acute care and medical management from admission to transfer or discharge.
The role includes involvement in the perioperative spectrum, critical care, med/surg care, consults, surgical first assisting, history and physicals, clinic duties, and any other duties in support of the trauma and acute care surgery practice.
Job specifics emphasize joining a multifaceted ACES team that provides comprehensive care for trauma and general surgery patients from arrival to discharge.
Responsibilities- Advanced Practice Practitioner (APP) will be trained to cover all aspects of the ACES team.
- Cover other subspecialties as needed.
- The APP will have the opportunity to cross-cover other APP-led service lines.
- As a full-time position, the APP will be responsible for three 24-hour shifts per two-week pay period.
- Additional shifts as needed.
- Perform routine and expanded job duties as listed in the provider's Delineation of Privileges on file with the Medical Staff Office, compliant with Maryland Board of Physicians or Maryland Board of Nursing regulations.
- In collaboration with the attending physician on call, demonstrate competence in required tasks and procedures; obtain histories, examine patients, admit and round daily, order and interpret tests, make initial diagnoses, and order treatments.
- Demonstrate knowledge and competency in managing basic medical and post-op surgical problems (e.g., SOB, fever).
- Perform in the operating room and emergency room as appropriate; provide diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventive care for critically ill patients.
- Communicate effectively with attending physicians, medical teams, other staff, patients, and families; instruct and counsel patients and families.
- Maintain a list of in-house patients and conduct daily rounds; write progress notes with updates and plans.
- Administer procedures such as suturing, chest tube placement, and central/peripheral line placement; assist as a first responder in the operating room.
- Maintain continuing education requirements: at least 50 hours of Category I CME every two years and 32 hours of trauma-related CME.
- Comply with Maryland Board of Physician or Board of Nursing standards and expanded job description protocols.
- Contribute to quality assurance and patient care as part of the High Reliability Organization.
- Participate in APP Council meetings, ACES team meetings, and related educational opportunities; engage in leadership activities and committee work as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree and graduation from an ARC-PA accredited Physician Assistant program with mandatory NCCPA certification and Maryland State Board registration, OR current certification to practice as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner.
- One year of surgical, emergency, or critical care experience is preferred.
- Must participate in ongoing continuing medical education programs.
- Credentialing must be obtained through the University of Maryland Capital Region Health Medical Staff Office.
- Maintenance of BLS and ACLS certification is required; ATLS is required and can be obtained after start date.
