Job Summary

Responsible for providing comprehensive and appropriate dental care and treatment to patients in a clinical setting. Responsible for dental health management, coordination of services with other agencies, clinical tracking of special population groups and any other activities or duties required to assure optimal patient services.

Essential Functions
  • Provide routine and emergency dental services, including diagnosis and treatment plans, general restorative procedures, periodontal procedures, minor oral surgery, crown and bridge, removable prosthodontics, uncomplicated endodontics and pediatric services.
  • Interpret x-rays and lab studies.
  • Administer anesthetics.
  • Administer or prescribe medications.
  • Conduct follow-up patient care.
  • Straighten teeth to correct bite issues.
  • Place sealants or whitening agents on teeth.
  • Provide dental and oral health education to patients and families about diet, brushing, flossing, use of fluoride, and other aspects of dental care.
  • Manage difficult patients and clients.
  • Take impressions, measurements and make molds for dental appliances and prostheses.
  • Analyze, interpret and diagnose conditions based on report or test findings.
  • Teach and train patients and staff on illness prevention.
  • Oversees maintenance of case histories, health examination reports, and other dental records.
  • Inspect and make recommendations regarding infection control and elimination of health hazards.
  • Actively participate in community dental programs.
  • Provide tele-dentistry visits when needed or appropriate.
  • May make house and emergency calls.
  • Refer patients for specialty care to other clinics or outside agencies as appropriate.
  • Assist with in-service and on-going training of clinic staff.
  • May conduct oral examinations to provide information needed for admission to school, consideration for jobs, or eligibility for insurance coverage.
  • Provides direct patient care as needed and appropriate to serve the community in accordance with the organization’s Health Care Plan.
  • Provides appropriate documentation of clinical care provided in a timely manner. This includes maintenance of patient charts in accordance with clinic protocols, and timely documentation of clinical procedures on encounter forms.
  • Complies with regulations regarding consultations and other services as required by patients’ insurance coverage.
  • Complies with Joint Commission standards for ambulatory care.
  • Communicate with others in verbal and written communication format.
  • Performs timely entry into, and manipulation of, the Electronic Health Record.
  • Nonessential Functions
  • Provides clinical leadership and acts as a resource to other members of the health care team, patients, or other members of the community.
  • Works with center manager to facilitate smooth operation of clinic flow.
  • Assures quality of patient care by participating in the organization’s Performance Improvement activities.
  • Cooperates with compliance review activities.
  • Submits information needed for credentialing files in a timely manner.
  • When needed, assists the Safety Officer with employee health activities, especially in the event of an exposure to blood borne pathogens.
  • Participates in team/staff meetings; attends in-service meetings and applicable workshops.
  • Performs any and all other duties required to provide for optimal patient care.

    Minimum Qualifications
  • Current License to practice dentistry in the State of Maryland.
  • Current Maryland prescriber number, and current D.E.A. and C.D.S. License.
  • Board certification or eligibility in dentistry. Board certification preferred, certification expected within one year of employment.
