Advanced Practice Professional – Hematology/Oncology
WVU Medicine – Western Virginia University Health System, comprising 18 hospitals and five institutes.
Position SummaryThe APP provides comprehensive patient care for hematology/oncology patients, performing assessments, coordinated care, education, diagnostics, therapeutics, and collaborating with the clinical team.
Minimum Qualifications – Nurse Practitioner- Graduate of a CCNE accredited nursing program with a Master’s Degree in Nursing.
- National Certification by an approved APRN Certification Center.
- Licensure or eligibility for licensure as a registered nurse and advanced practice registered nurse in West Virginia.
- BLS Certification required; additional Advanced Life Support training at discretion of department.
- Hematology/Oncology, acute care, or internal medicine experience preferred.
- Eligible new graduates will be considered.
- OCN or AOCN certification preferred.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree as Physician Assistant required.
- Graduate of an ARC-PA approved program.
- Certification by the National Commission for Certification of Physician Assistants required.
- Licensed or eligible for licensure by the WV Board of Medicine or WV Board of Osteopathic Medicine.
- BLS Certification required; additional Advanced Life Support training allowed.
- Hematology/Oncology, Acute Care, or Internal Medicine experience preferred.
- Eligible new graduates will be considered.
- Master’s level degree as Physician Assistant preferred.
- Manages comprehensive and individualized care for patients and families in the infusion center and ambulatory setting.
- Completes daily rounds; consults and/or pre-treatment or pre-procedure evaluations in the infusion center (as applicable).
- Participates in ambulatory clinics and inpatient care of patients.
- Completes integrated assessments.
- Orders additional tests or consults as appropriate following hem/onc faculty collaboration or established guidelines.
- Performs and communicates results of diagnostic tests following guidelines and scope of practice.
- Consults and communicates with clinic and hospital staff regarding abnormal findings.
- Performs succinct comprehensive clinical evaluations and documents findings in the medical record.
- Facilitates patient discharge and/or follow-up by ordering/coordinating services and tests prior to discharge from the infusion center necessary for outpatient follow-up appointments.
- Performs procedures following established guidelines, protocols, and scope of practice.
- Develops comprehensive individualized plan of care including acute management, teaching, discharge planning, and referrals.
- Participates in physician rounds (as applicable).
- Identifies unstable or complex hem/onc patient care situations and facilitates appropriate intervention in infusion center, clinic, and/or hospital settings.
- Recognizes emergency situations and initiates effective emergency care.
- Evaluates hem/onc patients and directs follow-up procedures and tests in ambulatory setting.
- Assists in the collection of outcome measures.
- Demonstrates diagnostic reasoning and critical thinking in clinical decision-making.
- Utilizes equipment safely.
- Applies scientific principles, standards of care, and research findings to decision-making.
- Employs teaching/learning theory and strategies to educate staff, students, patients, families, and community.
- Promotes learning environment responding to patient/family preferences, priorities, and readiness.
- Evaluates teaching effectiveness and collaborates with staff.
- Updates knowledge base throughout the year.
- Completes all identified clinical competencies.
- Serves as resource for staff caring for hem/onc patients.
- Provides educational programs to personnel in area of expertise.
- Mentors nursing personnel at all clinical levels.
- Participates in community programs and literature distribution.
- Communicates effectively with patients/families, physicians, and ancillary services to assure coordinated care.
