Responsibilities

  • Responsible for providing patient care within the Registered Nurse scope of practice utilizing critical thinking skills to manage ill or injured patients during transport between facilities.
  • Function as a resource and assist in the Emergency Department or a designated area where the nurse is immediately accessible for transport.
  • Demonstrate nursing expertise in caring for patients with complex and rapidly changing needs by using the nursing process.
  • Provide accurate assessment, anticipate potential problems, take appropriate action, perform interventions, and document accordingly.
  • Base decisions on relevant scientific principles and established standards of care.
  • Complete transport-related documentation and coordinate with other health care providers.
  • Stabilize acutely ill patients at referring centers, plan and evaluate care, and obtain consultations as needed.
  • Administer medications per WVUH policies and procedures.
  • Identify referral hospital education needs and facilitate education through informal or formal teaching; communicate needs to the Transport Supervisor.
  • Evaluate methods of practice and suggest changes to improve care.
  • Maintain clear radio and phone communications; ensure safety of patients, EMS personnel, staff, and other providers.
  • Ensure cleaning and maintenance of transport equipment and routine restocking of transport supplies.
  • Attend required educational and operational meetings and participate in continuing education activities.

Education, Certification, and/or Licensure

  • Current Registered Nurse license issued by the state in which services will be provided or current multi-state RN license through the enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC).
  • Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
  • Certified Transport RN (CTRN) through Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing or must be obtained within 2 years of hire.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequent standing, walking, talking, hearing, and using hands; occasional sitting, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and smell.
  • Heavy work: lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, standing, and carrying materials and equipment weighing 50+ lbs; occasional lifting up to 100 lbs; frequent lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • Visual acuity corrected to 20/40 or better; abilities include close, color, distance, peripheral, depth perception, and focus adjustment.
  • Must not use medications that interfere with duties unless approved by Employee Health.
  • Medical condition(s) not likely to be aggravated by transport duties; independent physician exam if necessary.
  • Hearing (aid permitted) – ability to perceive a forced whisper at >5 feet in at least one ear.
  • Occupational health evaluations as required by the company, including ad hoc evaluations for safety concerns.

Working Environment

  • Collaborative work with others and irregular hours.
  • Exposure to biohazards, infectious diseases, and patient care in various settings including transport to outlying hospitals via ambulance and helicopter.
  • Proximity to life-threatening conditions and working with equipment in potentially hazardous environments.

Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrates sound interpersonal and professional verbal skills with health care team members and the public.
