Acute Care & Outpatient Speech Therapist (SLP) - WVU Medicine East - Berkeley Medical Center

Evaluates and treats patients requiring speech-language-swallowing therapy.

• Current or temporary Speech-Language Pathologist licensure in the applicable state where services will be performed.
  • MD:
    Speech Language Pathologist License OR Limited Speech Language Pathologist License through Maryland Board of Audiologists, Hearing Aid Dispensers and Speech-Language Pathologists
  • OH:
    Speech Pathologists License OR Temporary Speech Language Pathologist License through Ohio Speech and Hearing Professionals Board
  • PA:
    Speech Language Pathologist License through Pennsylvania Board of Examiners in Speech Language and Hearing
  • WV:
    Licensed Speech Language Pathologist License OR Provisional Speech Language Pathologist License through the West Virginia Board of Speech-Language Pathology & Audiology
• Current ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competency in Speech Language Pathology OR must obtain within 48 months of hire.
• Obtain certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire date.

• One (1) year of speech language pathologist experience.

• Provides coordinated and comprehensive patient care including assessment, expected outcomes, rehabilitation interventions and evaluation with an interdisciplinary team approach.
• Evaluates speech, language, swallowing, and cognitive-linguistic needs and develops and implements treatment programs for assigned patients; documents treatments according to department policies and procedures.
• Determines/revises priorities for direct/indirect patient care activities based on patient need and available resources.
• Documents all treatments, according to department policies and procedures, as monitored by supervision, through documentation review and consultation with referring provider.
• Performs evaluation of patient response to tasks performed and delegated.
• Participates in the Performance Improvement program of the Rehabilitation Services department with emphasis on speech therapy to ensure timely, appropriate, and cost-effective services.
• May supervise assigned graduate assistants/interns, students and volunteers. Coordinates schedules, approves lesson plans, and provides feedback to students; prepares written evaluations of student performance as applicable.

• Minimal manual lifting; use lift equipment and/or patient handling aids as indicated. Follow Safe Patient Mobility policies.
• Heavy/Hard work: lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, and carrying materials and equipment weighing 40+ lbs.
• Specific vision abilities: close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

• Exposure to communicable diseases, body fluids and various cleaning and chemical agents.
