Qualifications
  • United States Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or equivalent degree in medicine or osteopathic medicine from a school approved by VA
  • Current, full‑unrestricted medical license in a U.S. state, territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia
  • Completed residency training accredited by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an approved core specialty program, leading to board‑certification eligibility
  • Physicians currently enrolled in an ACGME or AOA accredited residency are eligible to be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs), subject to full licensure and intermittent or fee‑basis employment
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English

  • Physical Requirements:

    Lifting up to 35 pounds intermittently, moderate carrying 15‑35 pounds intermittently, and performing other duties as described in the VA Directive and Handbook 5019
Duties
  • Provide perioperative medical care, anesthesia, pain management, and critical care services in accordance with the scope of privileges approved by the Medical Staff and Executive Committee of the Medical Staff (ECMS)
  • Conduct pre‑operative assessment, order and interpret relevant laboratory, imaging, and diagnostic studies, and obtain informed consent
  • Administer general, regional, neuraxial, and sedation anesthesia, managing airway and airway devices, and adjusting anesthetic depth based on physiologic parameters
  • Direct and supervise Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists, anesthesia residents, and students
  • Manage intraoperative fluid, electrolyte, and blood product therapy, and perform invasive monitoring such as arterial line, central venous, and pulmonary artery catheterization when indicated
  • Provide postoperative pain management, including regional blocks, PCA, and multimodal analgesia
  • Lead resuscitative efforts during perioperative emergencies, provide critical care, and manage ventilatory and hemodynamic support for critically ill patients
  • Offer pain management evaluations and interventions, including pharmacologic, interventional, and regional therapies
  • Provide anesthesia for procedures in the operating room and procedural suites such as endoscopy, interventional radiology, and cardiac catheterization laboratories
  • Offer sedation and anesthesia for imaging and minor surgical procedures
Base pay range
