Job Description:
JOB SUMMARY
The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) works under the direction of a Registered Nurse and in accordance to the patient/family care plan to collect patient information and provide direct patient care contributing significantly to the achievement of patient and family outcomes. As a member of the direct care team, the CNA is responsible and accountable for complete and accurate collection and recording of data, completion of routine and delegated direct patient care activities and communicating and collaborating with the Registered Nurse to prioritize workload.

EDUCATION
For positions requiring education beyond a high school diploma or equivalent, educational qualifications must be from an institution whose accreditation is recognized by the Council for Higher Education and Accreditation.

Must have or has had a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification awarded by the State of Wisconsin. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification awarded by the American Heart Association (AHA) within three months of hire.

DEPARTMENT/UNIT DESCRIPTION
6 North is a 28-bed, private room, patient care unit within the department of Adult Medical Services. The unit provides inpatient-nursing care to patients utilizing a Synergy Model of Care. Patient can be admitted with a variety of medical related diagnoses.
Services Provided/Patient
Conditions:
These patients include but are not limited to:
* Chest Pain and other stable cardiac issues:
Congestive Heart Failure, Hypertension, Atrial fibrillation
* Myocardial Infarction
* Pulmonary Emboli/Deep Vein Thrombosis
* Renal:
Dialysis
* Gastro-Intestinal Non-surgical:
Abdominal pain, Nausea/Vomiting, Gastrointestinal bleeding
* Respiratory/Pulmonary:
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Pneumonia, Dyspnea
* Neuro/Stroke:
Mental status changes, Weakness, Dementia
* Wounds
* Sepsis
* Cystic Fibrosis
* Diabetes
* Pain Management
Staffing Mix:
Patient care on 6 North is accomplished by 24/7 staffing through a combination of nursing personnel that include RN's, Nurse Techs and CNA's. Direct caregiver skill mix is determined each shift through established guidelines provided to the charge nurses by unit management through a shift management tool. Fluctuations in daily staffing models may vary from shift to shift or day to day due to acuity of patients and availability of staff.
Additionally, therapy services are provided to patients through Physical, Occupational, and Respiratory Therapy services. Operational support is provided to the department from Health Unit Coordinators and Decentralized Transport.
Patient Population:
The patient population on 6 North is approximately 4% early adult (20-29 years), 10% young adult (30-44 years), 20% middle adult (45-65 years) and 60% geriatric adult (65 years). Cultural needs are considered for Native Americans, Hmong, Amish/Mennonite, and Hispanic patients who account 1% of our total patient population. Interpretative Services are available to nursing staff as needed.

6 North staff is dedicated to providing nursing care and education to their patients and families.
Clinical procedures performed frequently on the unit include:
* Antibiotic therapy
* Blood product administration
* Anticoagulation therapy
* IV Drips:
Heparin, Diltiazem, and Nitroglycerin
* Management of venous access devices: PIV, Central Line,PICC lines, Hickman catheters
* Chest Tube Management
* Trach Management
* Management of drains
* Insertion and care of feeding tubes
* Monitoring and management of oxygen therapy modalities
* Wound/dressing care including wound vac's,
* Complex pain management

* O2 saturation monitor
* IVAC - IV pumps
* PCA pumps
* Telemetry monitor
* Tube feeding pumps
