Job Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Surgical ICU position in a Level 2 Trauma setting, requiring a WI or compact RN license and strong critical care skills.
Responsibilities
• Work in the 2E Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) of an acute care hospital
• 16-bed unit with 2 additional procedural beds, serving high-acuity surgical and trauma patients
• Nurse-to-patient ratios are 1:2, with 1:1 for higher acuity post-op hearts and 1:3 for medsurg/floor status patients
• Patient population includes cardiovascular surgery, trauma, neurosurgery, vascular, ortho, ENT, and general surgical ICU cases
• Responsibilities include titrating drips such as epi, norepi, propofol, precedex, vaso, dobutamine, heparin, insulin, dopamine, neo, and milrinone
• RNs read and document rhythm strips using GE telemetry monitors
• Cerner EMR used, with transition to Epic ongoing
• 12-hour shifts with potential for both days and nights, every other weekend and holiday required
• Floating may be required to the MICU or as a patient observer elsewhere in the hospital
• Provide comprehensive care for critically ill post-surgical and trauma patients in a collaborative environment
• Charge nurse and nursing house supervisor present on every shift, with intensivist and respiratory therapy support 24/7
• RNs are required to monitor and assess their own patients' telemetry data
• No specific scrub color required, but attire must be clean and professional
• Unit-specific orientation includes one day of onboarding plus two orientation shifts
• Must complete a skills checklist prior to starting
• Agency nurses are scheduled according to unit needs and approved time off
• Holiday coverage alternates every other holiday
• First time travelers are welcome to apply
Requirements
• Active WI or compact RN license required by start date
• Minimum of 2 years recent ICU nursing experience with high-acuity and surgical populations
• Certifications required: BLS (AHA) and ACLS (AHA); TNCC and NIHSS preferred
• Experience monitoring and titrating vasoactive drips required
• Must have experience with trauma and surgical ICU patient types
• Two professional references required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months and one from a peer or supervisor in the specialty within the last 3 years
• Former permanent staff must be gone at least 6 months and require facility approval
• Local candidates within 80 miles accepted at a reduced travel rate
