Marquette University’s Department of Theology invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Historical or Systematic/Dogmatic Theology, beginning August 2026. We seek a scholar whose work engages the history of Christian mystical and spiritual traditions in a substantive and rigorous way. Candidates with training in the languages of Christian antiquity and/or the Medieval period (e.g., Latin, Greek, Syriac, Coptic, Arabic, etc.)

Applicants should have primary expertise in Historical or Systematic/Dogmatic Theology. Within this area, we seek a scholar whose research and teaching engage Christian mysticism and spirituality, understood broadly and historically. Possible foci might include, but are not limited to:
- Engagement with prominent mystical and spiritual theologians from the early Christian, medieval, or early modern periods
- Constructive or systematic reflection on mystical theology, contemplative practice, ascetic/monastic theology, apophatic and cataphatic traditions, pneumatology, devotion to Mary and/or the saints, poetics of Christian spirituality, theosis/divinization, spiritual formation
- Theological and historical engagement with the conciliar tradition and emerging models of synodality
- Non-Western Christian traditions and their contributions to the history of Christian spirituality and theology
- Historical and theological developments in American Christianity, including their engagement with spirituality, ecclesial life, and doctrinal reflection
- The interface between doctrinal theology and Christian mystical texts, traditions, and practices, and the ability to work with these texts in their original languages (Latin, Greek)
- Reception of mystical theology in contemporary theology
- Liturgy and the historical development of liturgical traditions, especially as they intersect with spirituality and mystical theology
- The history of women in Christianity, including women mystics, spiritual writers, and contributors to theological, ecclesial, or liturgical traditions
- Ecclesiology, with attention to historical and systematic developments, and its relationship to spirituality, synodality, and the life of the Church
- Additional historical subdisciplines—such as hagiography, sacramental theology, devotional practices, the history of Christian formation, philological training in Latin and/or Greek, manuscript studies—that contribute to understanding Christian spirituality and theological development
Marquette’s department values scholars whose work builds bridges across historical and systematic disciplines and who can contribute to interdisciplinary conversations within the humanities.
