Job Synopsis
The Assistant Manager directly supervises five staff, and partners with the General Manager to form the Management Team of the Thrift Shop. This salaried full-time position is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the thrift shop, overseeing the processes from receiving donations to retail sales. The primary focus of the Assistant Manager is supervising staff, ensuring efficient operations and a daily customer centric focus, leading to the achievement of production and sales goals.
This leadership role is integrated into all aspects of the shop, providing supervision, coaching, evaluation, support, training and development for staff along with hands-on, side by side support for receiving, sorting, pricing, merchandising, and sales.
MCC is a charitable organization that partners with churches and community organizations worldwide to walk with people who are disadvantaged. MCC supports activities that provide emergency assistance, reduce poverty, and promote healthy communities, sustainable living and alternatives to violence.

Required
Leadership:
- Proven ability to provide leadership in a fast-paced environment, engaging the talents of volunteers and staff.
- Experience in managing, training and mentoring a staff team.
- Able to effectively deal with conflict in all areas of the shop (staff, volunteers, donors, customers).
- Ability to engage and influence others to achieve organizational goals.
- Ability to engage staff and volunteers in creating a positive, customer centric, welcoming atmosphere within the shop, balancing patience, creativity, humour, and energy.
- Ability to make quick and thoughtful decisions.
- Proven history of taking initiative, leading with creativity and flexibility.
Retail and Customer Service:
- Proven leadership in a retail environment and/or warehouse environment.
- Excels in a fast-paced environment with the ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines.
- Ability to create and refine systems and processes for increased efficiencies.
- Ability to read and interpret financial data/reports and make actionable decisions.
Communication:
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in English including reading, writing and analysis.
- Ability to communicate effectively with volunteers, staff, the public, and volunteer groups of all ages and backgrounds.
- Ability to communicate and enforce policies
General:
- Bachelor’s Degree (or equivalent education and training) and 3 to 5 years of related experience.
- Excellent organizational and relational skills with good attention to detail.
- Commitment to the operating principles of MCC Thrift and the values of MCC including a heart for justice and active peacemaking.
- Intermediate working knowledge of MS Office programs including Excel, Outlook, Word and general comfort with computers. Ability to learn and adopt new software.
- Required to work non-standard hours, including evenings and Saturdays.
- Able to lift 50 lbs. and exert 11 to 25 lbs. of force frequently.
- Able to spend 6 or more hours of intermittent standing or walking in a standard workday.
- Able to repeatedly bend or stoop to floor level shelves and able to reach upper shelves with use of a stool or a ladder when necessary.
