Overview
Location: Hybrid – Markham, ON (3-days in office, 2 days remote)
Job Type: Full-time
Salary: $70,000–$90,000 per year
Hiring a Substation Design Engineer for an associate-level position focused on detailed substation design to join our electrical engineering team. In this role, you will contribute to high-quality electrical layout plans and collaborate with technical teams (project manager, CAD designers) to deliver successful substation projects in conjunction with the client.
Responsibilities- Design substation layouts including equipment placement, bus configurations, and grounding systems
- Develop electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, bill of materials, and supporting documentation
- Perform equipment sizing, load calculations, grounding studies and specify electrical equipment according to relevant standards
- Specify substation components in accordance with CSA, IEEE, IEC, and other relevant standards
- Collaborate with internal design, protection & control, and civil teams to meet scope and deadlines
- Participate in design reviews, QA/QC processes, and ensure design packages are complete and code-compliant
- Support field teams during construction or commissioning when needed
- Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or higher - Licensing:
Licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Ontario with flexibility to obtain licensure in other jurisdictions as needed - Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field
- at least 5 years design experience in substation design engineering
- Proficiency with AutoCAD, ETAP, or equivalent software
- Familiarities with other tools such as Revit, PLS-CADD, SKM Power Tools, or GIS is asset
- Understanding of protection and control design (wiring, relay panels) is a bonus
- Strong understanding of CSA, IEEE, and IEC electrical standards
- Excellent communication, analytical, and organizational skills
- Travel:
Willingness to travel 25% across the region. This role will be located and focused in Ontario - Opportunity to grow into a project engineer or lead design role
