Job Summary

Manages the Markham Museum’s Summer or Holiday Day Camps weekly. Responsibilities include curriculum-based program planning, program delivery and administration. Oversees up to 100 campers ranging from 4 to 16 years of age, while supervising and coaching up to 10 staff including specialists and volunteers. Through effective leadership and programming, enables preschoolers, children and youth to develop skills, make friends, socialize and build self-esteem.

Accountable for day-to-day operations under the guidance of the Museum Camp Director or Museum Program Coordinator, ensuring camp activities are safe, educational, inclusive, high quality, creative, innovative, and meet the Museum’s overall goals.

Job Duties & Responsibilities
  • Designs and develops innovative and creative weekly program plans and daily activity plans that meet the weekly theme/description of the camp and the Museums institutional goals. Each full day, 5-day camp requires 20 activity plans per week. Common camp themes include science and technology, environment, archaeology, art and history.
  • Strives to improve the quality of the Museums programs through new and innovative activities, crafts and games.
  • Responsible for completing all program planning according to the allotted timeline to ensure successful implementation.
  • Works collaboratively with other Camp Supervisors at the Museum and other venues to create programs efficiently.
  • Ensures programming is adapted to camper needs with regards to safety, hygiene, weather, breaks etc.
  • Participates in camp activities including trips, games, and the overnight program as required.
  • Organizes and assists with set-up and cleanup of camp events, activities and programs. Ensures camp staff leave the Museum ground as they found it and all materials are kept in good working order.
  • Prioritizes child well-being, safety and protection throughout the camp. Evaluates situations for potential risks to the safety, protection and well-being of campers and staff, proactively taking mitigating actions to address such risks.
  • Acts as a leader role model, fostering a positive learning environment where people feel included as members of a team and are motivated to work towards common goals.
  • Serves as a liaison with parents of campers, reinforcing City of Markham customer service, diversity and inclusion (special needs, ethno-cultural, English as second language, socio-economic).
  • Provides regular updates and feedback to Museum Camp Director or Museum Program Coordinator.
  • Assists with preparing and delivering the Museum camp staff training under the direction of the Museum Camp Director and Program Coordinator.
  • Participates in coaching and recognition of camp staff, working in conjunction with full-time culture staff. Provides regular feedback and completes formal performance assessments for all direct reports. May assist with recruitment and screening of camp staff.
  • Assists with the on-going training, coaching and recognition to volunteers. Provides regular feedback and completes formal performance assessments for all direct reports. May assist with recruitment and screening volunteers.
  • Controls supplies and equipment inventory for sessions, ensuring that all necessary supplies and equipment are ordered and received in accordance with City policies.
  • Responsible for and participates in before and after care program.
  • Responsible for attendance records as well as leading the sign-in and sign-out process for their individual camp. Responsible for contacting all absentee campers’ parents/guardians in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrates the confidence and ability to make decisions independently of peers and in the best interests of the campers. Resolves problems and conflicts effectively as they arise.
