Job Description

What You’ll Do:

  • Lead team of lower-level auto mechanic(s) and/or inmates (provides work direction and training) engaged in automotive maintenance and repair
  • Perform major overhauls of engines or repair most difficult and complex equipment problems
  • Perform minor and major repairs of vehicles and equipment
  • Assist inmates/mechanic(s) in diagnosing and resolving mechanical problems, inspect completed work and equipment and ensure that procedures and safety practices are followed
  • Ensure tool control policies and procedures and chemical control policies and procedures are followed
  • Repair, rebuild and/or replace minor and major parts (e.g., electrical system components, alternators, water or fuel pumps, clutches, brake systems)
  • Adjust valves and perform preventive maintenance and service on vehicles and equipment
  • Perform miscellaneous mechanic work (e.g., body repair work, repairs or replaces tires, cleans or replaces diesel injectors)
  • Provide service and repair of vehicles and equipment on emergency basis
  • Clean garage area, equipment and/or tools
  • Mow grass
  • Operate equipment, snow plows and/or tow truck
  • Schedule maintenance and repairs of equipment
  • Maintain repair or service records
  • Maintain required certifications
  • Update shop manuals and parts books
  • Operate welding equipment (e.g., acetylene torch, MIG welding equipment) to heat, shape and weld machinery and equipment
  • Operate computer to enter, edit and retrieve data from computer systems
  • Perform inventories and/or orders and pick up parts and supplies
  • Control/restrict inmate movement
