Senior Media and Public Relations Consultant

Job Description Summary

The senior consultant, media and public relations, is responsible for shaping Ohio Health’s external reputation through strategic media relations campaigns locally, regionally, and nationally, across traditional and emerging media outlets. This position manages ongoing positive relationships with reporters, producers, and editors to pitch and secure coverage and works collaboratively with the Marketing Communications team to support overall marketing and communications efforts.

The senior consultant supports Ohio Health Marion General, Hardin Memorial, and Van Worth Hospitals and collaborates closely with peers in Marketing Communications and Community Relations to plan and execute integrated strategic public relations campaigns for multiple divisions.

Responsibilities And Duties
  • Public Relations Strategy (35%)
    • Assist in developing and implementing a process that informs, educates, and builds mutually beneficial relationships between Ohio Health and its stakeholders.
    • Connect external communication and outreach activities—including media relations, thought leadership, social media, blog, speaking opportunities, and strategic partnerships—to leverage and maximize reach and impact.
    • Work closely with community relations to support and promote Ohio Health’s contributions to the communities and populations it serves.
  • Media Relations Strategy (35%)
    • Develop and coordinate media relations plans to increase visibility and reputation locally, regionally, and nationally.
    • Promote editorial positions to advance Ohio Health initiatives.
    • Identify, develop, and pitch strategic and newsworthy stories in news media and social media channels.
    • Respond to opportunistic stories by maintaining strong local media relations and relationships with healthcare experts within the system.
    • Partner with marketing, communications, and Web teams to produce news content for digital and traditional media platforms.
    • Utilize the latest technology to develop and deliver audio and visual media across traditional media, web, and mobile platforms.
  • Issues Management and Crisis Response (30%)
    • Proactively anticipate issues and opportunities that affect Ohio Health and its communities.
    • Develop and maintain key messages regarding potentially controversial issues.
    • Direct media training and readiness of individuals who speak with the media.
    • Manage crisis communications responses as needed and serve as spokesperson when required.
    • Provide strategic counsel to senior management and physician leadership on media-related issues.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree (Required).
  • Degree in Journalism, Communications, or related field with six to eight years of experience.
Specialized Knowledge
  • Demonstrated skills in creating and implementing strategic public relations campaigns, integrated media relations, and communications plans with a track record of success in a service industry, ideally healthcare.
  • Superior planning, critical‑thinking, and writing skills; ability to lead and coordinate teams by influence.
  • Excellent oral and written communication, interviewing, research, and presentation skills; proactive and results‑oriented.
  • Ability to work under pressure, meet strict timelines and budgets, and thrive in a fast‑paced environment.
Desired Attributes
  • Experience working in matrixed organizations and developing relationships with C‑suite executives, community leaders, and stakeholders.
  • Healthcare environment experience or strong understanding of healthcare industry concepts, practices, and procedures.
  • Proficiency in public relations, media relations, and project planning.
  • Ability to prioritize, make decisions, and drive measurable results.
  • Initiative to identify media and public relations opportunities and solve problems across multiple disciplines.
  • Resilience under pressure and ability to meet deadlines and budget constraints.
