Union Tank Car Company is seeking applicants to become a member of our production team at our full‑service rail tank car repair shop in Marion, Ohio. Primary Job Functions- Uses a safety‑approved air gun to remove grit and dust after blasting, removes all protective car coverings, blows trucks and other car parts clean, and inspects the car to ensure it has not been damaged.
- Removes weld spatter, laminations, and sharp edges from inside tank/hopper cars by grinding, and grinds girth weld level on floor when required.
- Vacuum‑sucks the complete interior of a tank car, foils and tapes all stainless steel inside as required.
- Maintains equipment and replenishes supplies.
- Maintains a neat and orderly work area and reports potential hazards.
- High school diploma, GED, or pass a Combined Basic Skills Test.
- Experience in machine operation.
- Ability to work efficiently both as a team member and independently.
- Follow written and/or verbal instructions with minimal supervision.
- Read, interpret, and follow documents such as safety rules and operating manuals.
- Analytical and problem‑solving skills with strong attention to detail.
- Ability to perform general mathematical calculations including addition, subtraction, multiplication, fractions, percentages, and division.
- Safety and quality focused.
- Must be available to work any shift and be dependable and reliable for scheduled shifts, including overtime as per the union contract.
- Lift up to 50 pounds safely and drag blast hose along the railcar.
- Perform physical activities requiring significant arm and leg use, including climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and material handling.
- May work in confined spaces and at heights exceeding 4 ft. with appropriate PPE and fall protection.
- Requires close mental and visual attention, coordinating manual dexterity with sustained mental focus.
