Overview

VA Northern Indiana Health Care System is seeking Nursing Assistants to become part of our Healthcare Team. This position is at an intermediate or developmental level and is closely supervised.

Qualifications
  • Applicants pending completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
  • Citizenship:
    Citizen of the United States. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with chap 3 - section A - paragraph 3g - this part.
  • Experience or Education or Training:
    Six months of general experience, or one year of education above high school with courses related to the NA occupation, or completion of an intensive specialized training program of less than one year as a NA which may meet the experience requirements.
  • Physical Requirements:

    See VA Directive and Handbook 5019 - Employee Occupational Health Service for requirements.
  • English Language Proficiency: NAs must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005 - part II - chapter 3 - section A - paragraph 3j.
  • Grandfathering Provisions:
    May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation.
  • Grade Requirements:
    Creditable experience, knowledge of current practice, and the KSAs for the GS-3 to GS-5 levels. See the VA Qualification Standard for details.
  • Preferred Experience:

    At least 2 years of nursing assistant experience in addition to experience in mental health or substance use disorder.

Duties
  • The Nursing Assistant is at the intermediate or developmental level and is closely supervised; learning to provide complex nursing care under supervision.
  • Major duties include but are not limited to: assisting with patient care, observing and reporting, contributing to the nursing care plan, maintaining a therapeutic environment, and providing patient education.
  • Perform prescribed medical treatments and interventions as appropriate; document observations in the medical record; assist with use of equipment and monitoring devices.
  • Assist with patient education and orient patients and families to unit routines and policies.
  • Work as a cooperative member of the interdisciplinary team and protect patient privacy.
  • Shift patterns:
    Days with rotation 7:30am - 4:00pm, may include weekends and holidays;
    Midnight to 8:00am may include weekends and holidays.
