SummaryThe Marion VA Medical Center is seeking a full‑time Emergency Medicine Physician to join Specialty Service!
Qualifications- United States Citizenship (Non‑citizens may only be appointed when no qualified U.S. citizen can be recruited).
- Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs.
- Full and unrestricted medical license to practice in any U.S. State, Territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia.
- Completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty program leading to eligibility for board certification.
- Current proficiency in spoken and written English.
- Board certification or eligibility in Emergency Medicine preferred; current employment in emergency medicine preferred.
- Physical requirements:
pre‑employment physical, ability to lift 15–44 pounds, perform typical ED tasks (pushing, reaching, standing, kneeling for 3–5 hours).
- Perform medical screening examinations and stabilize all patients in the emergency department per EMTALA/COBRA requirements.
- Order, interpret, and apply diagnostic laboratory and imaging results for real‑time clinical decision‑making.
- Prescribe and administer therapeutics, devices, and procedures within licensure and privileging.
- Provide resuscitation and life‑saving interventions to stabilize critically ill or injured patients.
- Determine patient disposition efficiently and safely (admission, transfer, referral, or discharge).
- Coordinate care and consult specialty services when higher‑level evaluation is needed, escalating per on‑call expectations.
- Document all encounters contemporaneously in EDIS and the VA electronic health record (CPRS) per policy.
- Perform ED procedures as privileged, including airway management, rapid‑sequence intubation, mechanical ventilation, sedation, EKG interpretation, CPR, defibrillation, central venous access, intraosseous access, NGT placement, emergency cricothyrotomy, chest tube placement, fracture immobilization, laceration repair, abscess I&D, ocular pressure measurement, nasal packing, pelvic examination, and urinary catheterization.
- Promote continuity of care through SBAR communication with inpatient teams, consultants, EMS, nursing, and other interprofessional staff.
- Participate in quality assurance, peer review, chart review, performance improvement, and committee work.
- Support ED performance measures, process optimization, safety, occupational health, infection control, and fire protection programs.
- Maintain compliance with EMTALA/COBRA principles regarding timely medical screening, stabilization, on‑call engagement, transfers, and documentation.
- Perform medication reconciliation for all patients at disposition to prevent adverse events and ensure continuity.
- Utilize a fully computerized environment, maintaining proficiency in EDIS and CPRS workflows.
- Assist with pandemic, emergency, disaster, and mass casualty response planning and execution.
- Participate in staff meetings, morbidity and mortality conferences, mandatory trainings, and peer review activities per local policy.
