What You Will Do

The Machine Operator reports to the ATSM Production Supervisor. Set up and operate equipment including iron worker, shear, break press, large radial drill, CNC burning machine, roll, band saw, threading machine, and two spread drills to punch, cut, thread, tape, form and drill steel to fabricate tanks. Occasionally sharpens cutting tools and changes consumables, checks machined parts for size conformance to specifications, and reworks pieces that are out of tolerance where practical.

This position requires associates to complete specific training as located on the Marinette Operations Training Matrix. The company reserves the right to rotate employees to other departments or work assignments within the organization as needed based upon skill set and production needs.

How You Will Do It

DUTIES

  • Working from blueprints, layout work pieces to accurately comply with prints using calibrated equipment.
  • Set up and operate iron worker equipment with sections that cut to length, punch, and notch or trim various types of steel. Position punched dies and adjust to set up punching sections. Align blades, set up trimming and notching sections, and secure machinery as required. Measure work pieces to locate holes or cutting lines per work order and verify with scribed or counter punch methods.

    Operate the machine to engage the power section and position pieces for cutting, trimming, and notching. Set stops or jigs to specified points on built-in scales as pieces are processed.
  • Set up and operate CNC Burning Machine to burn shells, flanges, covers, and other components from pre-engineered programs. Load and unload with overhead hoists; adjust cutting parameters (voltage, speed, current, gas flow) for plasma and oxy-fuel cutting; load programs from memory or offline center; connect/disconnect gas cylinders; monitor cut quality and adjust as needed. Clean and grind parts; stamp heat numbers and record;

    operate water table controls.
  • Set up and operate power shear to cut steel. Position clamps and guides, set length and angle, and verify dimensions. Inspect work and stamp heat numbers as required.
  • Operate large rolling machines to bend sheet steel into cylinders; set up and adjust for desired curvature; measure arcs; perform re-rolls and bevel adjustments for weld penetration; use hammers to achieve proper curvature.
  • Set up and operate large radial drill press for drilling operations on plate and sheet steel. Determine hole locations, install tooling, set speeds and feeds, and secure work pieces. Move and align cutting tools and observe calibration throughout the operation. Sharpen tools as needed.
  • Set up and operate drill presses to perform drilling, countersinking, and tapping per specifications and setup charts. Use hand tapping equipment as required.
  • Utilize magnetic drill, hand taps/dies/gauges, and develop clamping devices to repair non-conforming machined parts/tanks.
  • Set up and operate presses with various jigs and dies; adjust pressure for desired depth of angle per prints.
  • Set up and operate horizontal and vertical band saws to cut material per print; cut coupons for testing.
  • Set up and operate single-spindle threading machines to thread and chamfer material. Install and adjust dies, cutting tools, and gauges; verify dimensions with fixed gauges.
  • Set up and operate milling machines to prepare physical testing coupons; inspect with micrometers.
  • Set up and operate angle and channel shears; prepare shells with power beveling equipment and track burner.
