What you will do

The Machine Operator reports to the ATSM Production Supervisor. Sets up and operates iron worker, shear, break press, large radial drill, CNC Burning Machine, roll, band saw, threading machine, and two spread drill to punch, cut, thread, tape, form and drill steel to fabricate tanks. Occasionally sharpens cutting tools and changes consumables, checks machined parts for size conformance to specifications and reworks pieces that are machined out of spec where practical.

This position requires Associates placed in the position to successfully complete specific training. These training requirements can be located on the Marinette Operations Training Matrix. The company reserves the right to rotate employees to other departments or work assignments within the organization as needed based upon skill set, production needs, etc.

How you will do itDUTIES
  • Working from blueprints, must layout work piece to accurately comply with print using calibrated equipment.
  • Sets up and operates iron worker equipped with separate sections that cut to length, punch and notch or trim various types of steel such as flat bar, round stock, square bar and angle iron. Positions specified punch and die set and turn pressure screws to lock them into ram and bed of machine to set up punching section. Positions specified cutting blades into cutting plot and notching dies or shear blades to ram and bed of machine and turns pressure or clamp screws to lock them in place to set up, cut off and trimming and notching sections of machine.

    Measures work piece with rule or tape, or traces from template to locate holes or cutting lines as specified by work order and works them with scribed, soapstone or counter punch. Pulls lever to engage power section used. Positions work piece into cutting slot or under punch, die or trim bade and align punch or blade with layout marks, pulls lever or depress pedal to activate machine.

    Sets stops or positions jigs to specified point on built-in scale with several pieces are worked.
  • Sets up and operates CNC Burning Machine to burns shells, flanges, covers and various other components from pre-engineered programs. Using overhead hoists manually loads and unloads machine. Using guide, determined correct voltage, cutting speed, current, and gas flow rates for plasma and oxy-fuel cutting processes. Loads programs from controlled memory or from an off-line programming center. Connects and disconnects gas cylinders as required.

    Recognizes cut quality problems and adjusts machine accordingly. Cleans and grinds parts when required. Stamps heat number on work piece and records. Operates water table controls to adjust water level.
  • Sets up and operates power shear to cut steel. Positions and clamps stops and slide guides to set length and angle of cut, using rule, built-in gages or template. Lifts work piece manually or by crane to machine bead and positions it against side guide and end stops. Starts machine which clamps work piece and lowers blade to cut medal. Lays out cutting lines on metal, using rule, square or template, when sheering single pieces.

    Inspects wok using tape, gauge or template to verify dimensions. Stamps heat number on work piece and records.
  • Operates large rolling machine to bend sheet steel into cylinders. Positions work piece into machine manually or using a crane. Uses guide to set machine for desire cylinder. Measures arcs with template. Rerolls out of round stake shells, make other adjustments to bevel ends of shell to assure proper weld penetration. Sets up and operates other rolling machines in much the same manner as large roll.

    Uses hammer to achieve proper curvature.
  • Sets up and operates large radial drill press to perform drilling operations to plate and sheer steel, according to specifications and machining instructions. Determines hole locations and set up from job orders, process sheets and machine instruction, including tooling, feed rates and cutting speeds, plans sequence of operation, suitable holding arrangements. Lifts work piece manually or with hoist to positions and secure it on machine base or in fixture with clamps or bolts.
