Position Information

The Traffic Engineering Technician position is located within the Cobb County Department of Transportation's Traffic Engineering Division. This role will play a key part in supporting the management of the County's traffic calming program by overseeing its day-to-day operations. This position will be maintaining important traffic volume data collection efforts and accident databases for the County. Daily collaboration with a variety of partners, including residents as well as other internal groups within the Department, is one of the essential functions of this role.

This role will require both external field work as well as internal office/computer capabilities on a regular basis.

Essential Functions

Investigates and reports on traffic complaints and requests for additional traffic control devices.

Monitors real time traffic from the TCC and provides real time communications regarding traffic conditions.

Performs field investigations in response to requests/concerns regarding traffic control signals and devices, e.g., school zones, new and existing subdivisions.

Gathers data from various sources for review, analysis and study purposes, e.g., conducting speed hump studies, setting traffic counters, setting up speed trailers.

Provides database verifications and uploading and/or downloading database as needed.

Assists County crews in trouble shooting intersection problems.

Performs data entry in the receipt, review, corrections and tracking of all traffic accidents; copies those reports involving County property damage and forwards accordingly.

Prepares written work orders to correct conditions to include recommending solution; prepares sketches and details to assist crews in implementing work orders.

Answers radio calls from crew members in the field and helps them verify problems by comparing field data to actual data in computer database.

Receives citizen complaints and reports of street light outages and ensures that these complaints are resolved; answers other questions and requests as received.

Drafts and verifies petitions and necessary documents for citizens requesting street lights, speed humps or other traffic control signage or devices in accordance with county ordinance.

Performs intersection sight distance studies; participates in gathering, tabulating and summarizing speed and volume data; performs turning movement counts; prepares signing plans for detours.

Prepares fact sheets for road closings and house moves.

Maintains database of county-wide lighting districts and district/quadrant traffic operations.

Maintains attendance and punctuality within customary tolerances for this position.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

High School diploma or GED; supplemented by two years previous experience that provides broad working knowledge of traffic engineering principles.
Licenses and Certifications

Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License.
Physical Abilities
Tasks require the ability to exert very moderate physical effort in light work, typically involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (12-20 pounds).

Sensory Requirements

Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

Environmental Factors

Essential functions are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
