Heavy Equipment Mechanic, Automotive Technician
Purpose
Provide body, glass, paint repair, and wiring services to all fleet equipment. Accomplished by providing estimates and necessary repairs on units involved in collision or minor damages and normal wear and tear, installing different beds and aftermarket items, installing emergency lights or advisory lights and equipment, prepping and painting, suspension frame repair, and interior and upholstery repairs.
Distinguishing Characteristics- Assist with more complex repairs and independently perform maintenance and repair of fleet vehicles requiring routine diagnosis, removal and replacement of parts, and troubleshooting for common automotive problems.
- Perform skilled diagnostics and troubleshooting utilizing automated diagnostic tools combined with extensive knowledge of the field.
- Make major repairs by replacing major components such as engines, brakes, heating and air‑conditioning systems, drive trains, and transmissions.
- Perform preventive maintenance services on county trucks, apparatus, and equipment (changing oil, air filters, fuel filters, fan belts, radiator hoses, and spark plugs).
- Inspect and perform hydraulic brake repairs, including replacing the master brake cylinder, brake pads, calipers, hydraulic lines, and replacing or repairing clutches on manual transmissions.
- Perform diagnostics and repairs of electrical and electronic systems controls.
- Complete service orders to document parts and labor used in service and repair activities.
- Road‑test the operation of trucks and equipment upon completion of repairs to ensure proper functioning and safe operating condition.
- Ensure the safe and proper operation of trade tools and power equipment.
- Conduct mobile fueling and fluid servicing of county trucks and equipment.
- Perform tire changes, including operating the tire machine, breaking down built‑up tires, building new or used tires, and balancing for medium/heavy duty trucks, specialty vehicles, and off‑road equipment.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
High school diploma or GED supplemented by three years progressively skilled experience in heavy trucks/equipment service, maintenance, and repair. A valid Commercial Driver's License is required depending on the area of assignment.
Preferred Licenses and Certifications- National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (NIASE) certification
- Preventative maintenance certification
- Medium/Heavy truck brakes certification
- Diesel engine certification
- Electrical/Electronic systems certification
- Heating, ventilation and air conditioning refrigerant handling and recovery certification
- Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) Pump certification for fire apparatus
Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
