Automotive Technician II

Overview

The purpose of this classification is to perform maintenance and repair of County-owned vehicles and equipment.

Positions in this class assist with more complex repairs and are expected to independently perform maintenance and repair of fleet vehicles requiring routine diagnosis, removing and replacing parts, and troubleshooting for common automotive problems.

• Perform vehicle inspections: inspect and test vehicle systems including drive train, engine operation, transmission operation, suspension, steering, brakes, electrical system, HVAC and emissions; complete or revise work orders; obtain required parts; perform emission tests per state law; inspect and test completed work; update required records.
• Perform routine and assist with complex repairs on vehicles: gather information from operator reports, fault codes; troubleshoot and diagnose problems; identify items needing repair; complete required repairs; ensure vehicle operation and performance is within specified limits.
• Perform preventive maintenance on vehicles: check and replace fluids; drain and replace oil; collect and recover Freon; change and replace filters; lubricate mechanical parts; install and replace blades; rotate, mount and balance tires; replace tires, belts and hoses; check and replace batteries; grease equipment; flush radiators; perform tune-ups or other preventative maintenance activities as assigned.
• Determine amount of materials required for projects: gather equipment, parts and supplies; assist in monitoring inventory levels; initiate requests for new or replacement materials.
• Operate or use various machinery, equipment, power tools, hand tools and supplies to complete work assignments; maintain basic mechanics tool kit or vehicle-specific maintenance tool sets.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

• High School Diploma or GED required; supplemented by vocational training and 2 years as an automobile technician or 4 years of experience demonstrating progressive skills in mechanical repair of vehicles.
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
• Two (2) or more Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) current certifications preferred.

Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, smoke, temperature and noise extremes, hazardous materials, fire, unsafe structures, heights, confined spaces, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, bright/dim lights, toxic agents, animal/wildlife attacks, animal/human bites, explosives, firearms, water hazards, violence, disease, pathogenic substances, or rude/irate customers.

Tasks require the ability to exert heavy physical effort in heavy work, with greater emphasis on climbing and balancing, but typically also involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds); may occasionally involve heavier objects and materials (up to 100 pounds).
