Job Description
GDS Associates, Inc. is looking for strong entry-level candidates, or mid-career level candidates with experience in the energy industry, to join its Planning & Advisory Business Unit. In this role, you will support power supply planning efforts for public power utility clients, contributing to the development of long-term strategies to meet power demand, enhance system reliability, and optimize energy resources. The ideal candidate would have a background in engineering, energy systems, business and/or finance, or a related field, and would be interested in helping develop strategic solutions in the dynamic energy industry.

The Planning & Advisory Business Unit helps support a variety of unique and challenging long-term planning processes on behalf of our public power and utility industry clients across the US. The Planning & Advisory Business Unit evaluates different generation resources that can be used to meet the needs of our electric utility clients' retail customers and develops customized, strategic recommendations to secure cost-effective and reliable power for our electric utility clients.

In addition, our team is involved from coast-to-coast in structured and unstructured power markets creating sustainable solutions for planning, procurement, and implementation.

Responsibilities:
  • Use common industry models and tools as needed to perform detailed analytics.
  • Contribute to consulting projects by summarizing modeling results and seeking out peer review of material to support delivery of high-quality client-specific projects.
  • Communicate with clients and make presentations as part of team effort.
  • Support the development of power supply resource strategies for multiple clients, incorporating existing and future regulatory/legislative actions, generation technology alternatives, and power supply diversity objectives.
  • Support solicitations for power supply resources, coordinate with RFP respondents, and review RFP proposals to identify key issues for use in preparing evaluations.
  • Support economic feasibility studies of long-term and short-term power supply resource alternatives.
  • Support the creation of market power analyses and financial planning models.
  • Assist clients with day-to-day power supply management activities.
  • Financial planning, modeling and operating budget preparation.
  • Prepare energy, capacity, and REC price forecasts.
  • Learn and work in organized market structures and regional transmission organizations such as SPP, MISO, PJM, and ERCOT.
For Mid-level candidates:
  • Provide assessments of market fundamentals, analyze changing landscape of market design in power markets, and provide insight on changing market rules and impact to client critical planning functions.
  • Prepare and assist with contract negotiations on behalf of clients for existing and future power supply resources.
Experience and Skills
Technical Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Energy Systems, Business and/or Finance, or similar energy industry-related field.
  • Strong working knowledge of MS Office Software (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint). Advanced proficiency in Excel preferred.
  • For Mid-level candidates, 2+ years work experience in the electric power industry
  • Experience with Visual Basic, Python, SQL, or other programming languages is a plus.
  • General knowledge of wholesale power markets, federal/state restructuring activities, and regulatory/legislative issues in the electrical industry is a plus.

Locations:
  • Strong preference is for candidate to report to GDS's Marietta, GA headquarters (Hybrid).
  • We will consider remote employment for experienced candidates.
