Part‑Time Library Assistant II – Sewell Mill and Powder Springs
Position located at Sewell Mill and Powder Springs Library. The Powder Springs library role includes services at circulation and reference desks and assists the Youth Services Librarian with programs and outreach.
Schedule:
18 hours per week, including nights and weekends, plus an additional 4 hours (1:00–5:00 p.m.) on scheduled Sundays.
- Provide customer service to library patrons and the public: greet visitors, direct them to library areas, provide assistance and information related to library services, fees, procedures, city information, and directions.
- Research book titles, availability, patron records, or related information; reserve materials for patrons; notify patrons about overdue books, arrival of reserved books, or other issues.
- Assist patrons with the use of library equipment in the assigned area.
- Return library books and materials to appropriate shelving areas; ensure proper order and labeling; locate and search for missing materials as needed.
- Check library materials in and out: operate the library's automated circulation system to charge, discharge, and renew books; count paperbacks checked out; retrieve books from book drop; inspect materials for damage; withdraw materials in need of repair.
- Inspect materials for routing slips or other identification prior to shelving; route books to other locations as appropriate; sort and arrange materials on book carts for shelving; separate new books for display.
- Perform general tasks related to library operations: sort and organize donated paperbacks and other materials; move book carts; maintain general appearance of the library; clean counters; water plants; run various errands.
- Monitor inventory levels of library supplies; initiate requests for new or replacement materials.
- Answer the telephone: provide information and assistance; take and relay messages or direct calls to appropriate personnel; return calls as necessary.
- Provide computer and reference assistance to library patrons: assist patrons in finding required information; instruct patrons in use of library systems and resources; suggest appropriate internal and external resources for queries; conduct informal training as needed.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Bachelor's degree is required.
- Supplemented by one year of experience in customer service or related field, or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
- Enjoys working with children and teens.
- Ability to create fliers and displays to promote collections, services, and programs.
- Experience with art activities and/or making crafts.
- Possesses artistic or creative skills.
Tasks require the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (5–10 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation.
Sensory RequirementsSome tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
Environmental FactorsEssential functions are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
