Job Summary
Performs a variety of tasks involved in the maintenance, repair and/or construction of the City’s wastewater collection and drinking water distribution systems. Employee’s supervision is dependent on experience and license level: trainee’s perform work under close supervision with minimal latitude in the use of initiative and independent judgment, whereas Level III licensed operators have some flexibility in decision making with minimal supervision.
EssentialFunctions
- Performs basic skill level operations involving the construction, repair, and maintenance of water and/or wastewater systems
- Performs basic maintenance and repair of vehicles, equipment, plant facilities and tools
- Operates specialized vehicles, tools, and equipment used in maintenance and repair of water and/or wastewater systems
- Accurately reads and records water meters for billing purposes
- Installs and changes meters; turns service on and off as needed
- Performs lawn and grounds maintenance tasks
- Cleans and maintains buildings and related equipment such as changing air filters and caring for ornamental plants, trees, and landscaping
- Maintains fire hydrants in company service areas
- Maintains simple records and logs; completes reports as necessary
- Ensures that all areas are clean and free of anything that would constitute a safety hazard
- Assists in resolving customer problems and complaints and in the collection of past due accounts
- Assists in the construction of plant equipment and facilities
- May be required to work weekends and holidays; may be required to respond to after hour calls

Education and Licensing- High school diploma or GED; supplemented by one or more years’ experience in maintenance; or an equivalent combination of education, certification, training, and/or experience.
- Florida Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) including appropriate endorsement(s) preferred.
- Class III Distribution System Operator license issued through the State of Florida Department of Environmental Protection and a backflow tester and repair license is preferred. If employee does not hold preferred licenses, must obtain a Distribution 3 license within the first 18 months of employment.
- Regular in office attendance is required.
- Systems Technician Trainee – Entry level classification. Minimum: $38,799, Midpoint: $49,469, Maximum: $60,139.
- Systems Technician I – Technical level classification. Minimum: $43,363, Midpoint: $55,288, Maximum: $71,852.
- Systems Technician II – Journey level classification. Minimum: $50,210, Midpoint: $64,019, Maximum: $77,825.
- Systems Technician III – Senior level classification. Minimum: $55,916, Midpoint: $71,292, Maximum: $86,670.
- Basic to advanced knowledge of construction, maintenance, and repair of water and wastewater systems.
- Basic to advanced knowledge of safety hazards, principles, and procedures.
- Basic to advanced knowledge of general maintenance tasks and procedures.
- Basic to advanced knowledge of ground maintenance and installation.
- Skill in working independently and following through with assignments with minimal direction.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
- Ability to regularly attend work and arrive punctually for designated work schedule.
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Ability to organize work for timely completion.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to deal courteously and effectively with the public.
Depending on functional area of assignment, tasks involve the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work and may require occasional lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of heavy objects or materials (up to 80 pounds). Tasks that require moving objects of significant weight require the assistance of another person and/or use of proper techniques and moving equipment.
Environmental RequirementsTasks are regularly performed inside and/or outside with potential for exposure to adverse environmental conditions (e.g., dirt, cold, rain, fumes).
Sensory RequirementsSome tasks require manual dexterity, in addition to visual and hearing acuity. Some tasks may involve identifying and distinguishing colors. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally and in writing.
Emergency Response and Essential Employee StatementAll employees are subject to recall around the clock for emergency response operations, which may require irregular work hours, work at locations other than the normal work location, and may include duties other than those specified in the employee’s official job description.
