Responsibilities

  • Performs fire control and suppression tasks in both structural and non-structural incidents including extinguishing and containing fires with proper agents; entering structures to protect life/property; entering confined spaces; climbing ground and aerial ladders; performing search/rescue and salvage operations
  • Participates in inspection, operation, inventory, testing, and documenting the operational readiness of personal protection gear, unit equipment and tools, apparatus, vehicles, and medical response supplies; restocks materials and supplies as indicated
  • Performs emergency rescue operations in preserving life and property including search and rescue, extricating persons from entrapments; stabilizing victims for transport; administering emergency medical care; participates in drills and training in standards, methods and techniques applied to fire science, emergency medical care, rescue operations, and critical incident response
  • Administers emergency medical care through the initial assessment, triage, treatment, and stabilization of patients following established protocols
  • Maintains radio communications with dispatch center, hospital personnel, and other public safety agencies to receive and transmit instructions involving patient care; determines the need for additional assistance
  • Adheres to regulatory records reporting, documentation protocols, and compliance standards regarding authorization, use, distribution, and tracking of controlled substances
  • Participates in and contributes to the operations, emergency medical services, fire prevention, public education, and training functions of the department
  • Remains abreast of new and emerging protocols, techniques, systems, and methodologies in the provision of pre-hospital/in-transit medical care
  • Maintains effective communications with community agencies, governmental and health organizations, educational institutions, and local civic and business organizations
  • Maintains current knowledge of trends and developments in the technical fields of fire science and emergency medical response; exercises safety and operates in various adverse conditions
  • Responsible for reporting to duty during all natural and man-made disasters
Qualification and Knowledge
  • High school diploma or GED; state of Florida Firefighter certification; EMT or Paramedic certification; valid Florida driver’s license; additional certifications/training preferred (EVOC, Hazmat Technician, Apparatus/Pump Operator, Rescue Driver)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of applicable federal, state and local regulatory laws, standards and requirements governing the work
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the supplies, equipment, apparatus, and emergency vehicle standards necessary to maintain a state of readiness for response to fire rescue emergencies
  • Demonstrated knowledge of department policies and procedures for the preparation, production and maintenance of reports, documentation and records
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the incident command system, mass casualty incident protocols, and the field operations guidelines applicable to the nature, extent, and type of incident
  • Skill in working independently and following through with assignments with minimal direction
  • Ability to assess scene conditions, recognize current and potential safety hazards, and proceed with rescue operations in a manner to protect personal, team, and life safety
  • Ability to operate a computer using Microsoft Office products (Word, Outlook, and Excel) and applicable department/organizational specific software
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
  • Ability to provide exceptional internal and external customer service
  • Ability to regularly attend work and arrive punctually for designated work schedule
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; ability to organize work for timely completion; ability to follow orders and commands
Physical Requirements

Physical requirements in accordance with firefighter minimum qualifications or standards, in accordance with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1582.

Environmental and Sensory Requirements

Tasks are regularly performed inside and/or outside with potential exposure to adverse environmental conditions such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, smoke, temperature and noise extremes, hazardous materials, fire, unsafe structures, heights, confined spaces, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, bright/dim lights, toxic agents, animal/human attacks, explosives, firearms, water hazards, violence, disease or pathogenic substances.

Some tasks require manual dexterity, visual and hearing acuity, the ability to perceive and discriminate visual cues or signals, and the ability to communicate orally and in writing.
