Position: Head Lifeguard (Temporary Summer Season)

Overview

Marana is one of the fastest growing communities in Southern Arizona, located approximately 20 minutes northwest of downtown Tucson and 75 minutes southeast of Phoenix. The Town uses a Strategic Plan with five focus areas:

The Town of Marana is seeking individuals who enjoy swimming and working outdoors and are committed to maintaining a safe environment. The Parks and Recreation Department is hiring Head Lifeguards for an exciting season at the Marana Aquatic and Recreation Center to help ensure a safe and positive experience for visitors.

Pursuant to the Marana Town Code, Sections 3-1-2(D) and 3-1-3(B), and the current Salary Schedule implemented by the Town Manager, the position of Head Lifeguard is defined as a Temporary position. Temporary positions are at-will employees and employment that may be terminated at any time with or without cause.

This recruitment is specific to the Head Lifeguard position. Applications will not be automatically considered for other recruitments. Candidates seeking consideration for the Lifeguard position must submit a separate application.

Star Guard Elite Lifeguard Training and Certification will be provided by the Town to hired applicants upon beginning employment.

SCHEDULE
:
This position works a variable schedule based on operational needs, for up to 19 hours per week. Early mornings, late evenings, Saturday, Sunday and holiday shifts may be assigned.

DURATION
:
Temporary Summer season role; extension possible based on performance and business needs into next season.

  • Summer Season:
    March 1 – July 31
  • Fall Season:
    August 1 – November 30
  • Winter Season:
    December 1 – February 28

Hiring Rate: $18.00 per hour

Returning Marana employees may be eligible for a $0.25/hour increase for each returning year (12 months worked) up to a maximum pay rate of $19.00/hour.

  • Leads, schedules, coordinates, conducts and participates in required in-service training for lifeguards; assists with lifeguard scheduling ensuring adequate coverage.
  • Assists with the management of activities and aquatic programs; ensures swimmers are well supervised in the pool and on the decks; enforce all pool rules, regulations and safety standards.
  • Maintains pool sanitation, tests pool water for chemical balance and maintains log; inventory supplies and equipment.
  • Provides customer service answering inquiries for aquatic programming and providing information to patrons.
  • Leads lifeguards in daily operations and monitors performance to ensure focus, accountability, and task completion.
  • Demonstrates leadership and serves as a positive role model for lifeguard staff.
  • Performs rescues.
  • Monitors facility operations to help prevent accidents and drowning incidents.
  • Maintains high standards of safety and professional skills.
  • Assists with custodial maintenance and related assignments as needed.
  • Maintains courteous and cooperative interactions with the public at all times.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Must be at least 16 years of age at time of application submission
  • Must have over 1 year (12 months) of previous lifeguard experience

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Selected candidates will be invited to interview for the position and complete an in-water screening. Both will occur on March 12 and March 13 (afternoon and evening sessions will be available).
  • Water Screening:
    Passing candidates must have the ability to swim 50 yards without stopping, swim 50 yards with a rescue tube, tread water for 2 minutes without use of hands and retrieve a 10-pound dive brick from bottom of the pool.
