The Blast Technician is responsible for supporting the safe, efficient, and effective execution of blasting operations in an open-pit copper mining environment. This role ensures compliance with all regulatory standards and company policies while optimizing fragmentation, minimizing environmental impact, and promoting overall mine productivity.
Key Responsibilities:
- Prepare blast patterns and assist with the layout, loading, and initiation of blasts.
- Handle, transport, and store explosives in accordance with safety protocols and legal requirements.
- Conduct pre- and post-blast inspections to ensure safety and operational compliance.
- Operate and maintain blasting-related equipment, including detonators, blasting machines, and measuring tools.
- Collect and report data on blast performance, fragmentation, and vibration monitoring.
- Work closely with mine engineering, drilling, and operations teams to ensure blasting aligns with production goals and design specifications.
- Monitor environmental impacts of blasting, including dust, noise, and ground vibration, and recommend improvements where needed.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives for blasting efficiency and safety.
- High school diploma or equivalent; technical certification in blasting, mining, or related field preferred.
- Minimum 2-3 years of experience in open-pit mining or blasting operations.
- Strong knowledge of explosive handling, blasting techniques, and regulatory requirements.
- Ability to read and interpret mine plans, drilling patterns, and technical drawings.
- Demonstrated commitment to safety and environmental standards.
- Good physical condition and ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Strong teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Outdoor mining environment with exposure to noise, dust, and vibrations.
- Requires use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Rotating shifts, weekends, and overtime may be required.
