Position: Gardener (Temporary Parks & Recreation Aide)

The current vacancies are in the Parks & Recreation Department.

This position is responsible for assisting with the propagation, planting, maintenance, and presentation of gardens throughout Ramsey County. This position will serve Ramsey County Parks and Tamarack Nature Center. This position provides an opportunity to work outdoors during the summer doing a variety of tasks. Park maintenance works with full-time staff to maintain the county’s parks, trails and facilities.

Estimated hours:

  • Weekdays, 6:30 a.m.–3 p.m.
  • Full-time hours available.

Responsibilities
  • Installation, maintenance, and removal of annuals, perennials, plants, shrubs, and trees at various garden sites and planter locations.
  • Ensure that all plants at these sites are adequately weeded, watered, pruned, and fertilized so as to remain healthy and attractive throughout the growing season.
  • Demonstrate courtesy and tact when dealing with the public and staff.
  • Works independently and take the initiative in solving issues.
  • Ability to communicate effectively via verbal and written reports and forms.
  • Miscellaneous tasks related to maintenance and development of park and recreation areas.
  • Other duties as assigned.

This is an unclassified, at-will temporary position. This position requires an open screening and selection process. There is no exam for this unclassified, at-will, temporary position. All applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be forwarded to the department for consideration. Employment isn't guaranteed beyond the end of this assignment.

Definition of Unclassified from the Ramsey County Personnel Act:

Subdivision
1. General. The appointing authority may discharge employees in the unclassified service with or without cause. Employees in the unclassified service have no right to a grievance appeal from discharge or other disciplinary action under sections 383A.281 to 383A.301. An employee in an unclassified position shall not have tenure but shall be entitled to all benefits associated with tenure such as vacation leave, sick leave, health insurance, and other benefits as determined by the county board.
