Duties/Responsibilities
- Performs general maintenance activities on regional roads and roadsides, including general summer roads maintenance, operating small‑sized vehicles (pick‑ups, utility vehicles), and using hand tools and maintenance equipment.
- Cuts grass and vegetation, maintains flowerbeds, and performs shrub maintenance along regional roadsides and on selected regional properties, using hand equipment, power trimmers, and riding mowers.
- Performs concrete repairs on bridges, curbs/gutters, sidewalks, and catch basins/manholes, including removal and replacement.
- Performs cold/hot patching, dead animal removal, guide rail/cable maintenance, and drainage maintenance.
- Performs traffic control duties around worksites for own and crew’s safety.
- Cleans and performs maintenance on bridge decks and structural components.
- Repairs potholes, asphalt road surfaces, and shoulders.
- Assists to install traffic control devices, including barrier rails and cables, posts and markers, temporary signs, barricades, and delineators.
- Work requires manual dexterity, visual concentration and attention to detail, frequent standing, walking, climbing, bending, stooping, reaching, and maintaining balanced footing on slopes and uneven ground.
- Lifts and carries equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 kg/110 lbs (with help over 50 lbs). Pushes and pulls equipment, pipes, and concrete parts weighing up to 100 kg/220 lbs (with assistance over 22 kg/50 lbs).
- Works outdoors on the regional road system and properties in varying weather conditions.
- Follows health and safety policies and procedures and uses personal protective equipment (e.g., protective clothing, masks, respirators) to mitigate risks associated with working around and with heat, dust, noise from equipment, traffic, various chemicals, and potentially hazardous materials or conditions.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
- Ability to read and understand policies, procedures, and instruction material such as safety notices, equipment operation manuals, safety data sheets, and product labels.
- Basic writing and math skills.
- Functional knowledge of the proper operation and use of job‑related equipment.
- Knowledge of and ability to comply with policies, procedures, standards, regulations, and legislation.
- Ability to function effectively and safely in a variety of environmental conditions, including hazards related to the roads system.
- Communication skills to understand verbal instructions; interact positively with supervisors, staff, and the public; and participate as an effective team member.
- Ability to read, understand, and interpret traffic control plans.
- Ability to complete vehicle maintenance checklists and a daily log of hours spent operating equipment.
