- Assists to administer the roadway maintenance program (e.g., asphalt, storm water management, bridges, noise walls, fences, retaining walls, graffiti removal, vegetation management).
- Performs site inspections to ensure work is completed per contract terms and project plans. Recommends approval of maintenance work and payment.
- Performs conventional surveying for minor construction and roads maintenance projects, and develops design plans for review and approval.
- Trains and supports operations staff with using software systems. Participates in developing draft standards and operating instructions.
- Assists with preparing and launching the winter maintenance program (e.g., calibrating plow trucks, troubleshooting, testing, monitoring salt use).
- Follows up on public complaints regarding damaged infrastructure. Visits sites and meets with requestors to compile information for recommending actions.
- Compiles information and participates in analysis for long range planning and asset management.
- Researches and recommends new technologies and techniques, equipment, and materials. Assists to monitor and evaluate programs.
- Participates in the development of maintenance work schedules and programs. Performs field and method studies and research to determine the most efficient, effective methods for performing maintenance activities.
- Conducts field visits approximately 70% of the time, and works in a standard office environment approximately 30% of the time. Travels between sites/locations daily.
- Exercises precautions to mitigate risks associated with working around/with weather conditions, dust, noise, exhaust, traffic, heavy equipment, roadsides, and construction sites.
- Work is subject to interruptions from staff, contractors, and the public, and deadlines.
- Range of movement is required at field/construction sites (walking, bending, stooping). Regularly carries cans of paint, pylons, road barriers, and signs weighing up to 27 kg/59 lbs (with help over 50 lbs).
- Performs related duties as assigned.
- Knowledge and skills in civil engineering technology as it relates to roads and highways are acquired through current enrolment in a civil engineering technology program.
- Knowledge of and ability to comply with policies, procedures, standards and legislation.
- Working knowledge of public works procedures, methods, and equipment.
- Working knowledge of construction or maintenance equipment operation.
- Analytical, research, organization, and problem-solving skills to analyse performance data; research new technologies, equipment, materials, and procedures; and coordinate projects and prioritize work.
