Assist the special education teacher in the operation and function of the classroom, and to work with individual or small groups of students as directed by and under the supervision of the special education teacher. Depending on program needs, management reserves the right to make changes in your assignment. Assist the classroom teacher with instructional tasks, working directly and indirectly with K‑5 students.
These tasks will constitute the major portion of the Educational Support Professional time. Includes breakfast supervision as well as lunch/recess.
- Assist in the implementation of the students' special education instructional plan(s) including physical and behavioral management.
- Assist in the implementation and follow through of the students' individual plans in all settings in which the program is delivered and as assigned by the supervising teacher.
- Collect observational data about assigned student(s) in various school settings and report to supervising teacher.
- Assist in the preparation, collection and maintenance of educational materials and equipment.
- Assist in staffings, conferences and any other special meetings as requested by supervising teacher.
- Complete educational forms, reports and other student‑related data relevant to the individual student(s) in the special education program as directed by the special education teacher.
- Any other duties deemed necessary by the team and approved by the Special Education Coordinator/Special Education Supervisor.
- Participation in district training program prior to and during employment.
- Assist with breakfast, as well as lunch and/or recess supervision.
- Assist in general classroom operational procedures such as setting up and operating audiovisual equipment, setting up physical education equipment, preparing and setting up art supplies.
- Work directly with students individually or in small groups on academic and motor or social skills, e.g., math, science, English, color recognition, decision making, self‑esteem building, etc.
- Assist students and teachers in large group activities/projects such as art, physical education, dramatics.
- Seek out special instructional materials to assist with students having particular learning problems, e.g., separate math‑skill worksheet, not part of the teacher's curriculum.
- Type worksheets, tests, or various instructional material; duplicate and assemble.
- Correct tests via computer. Record results in grade books.
- Perform other duties as assigned by principal or designee.
- Applicants must be Highly Qualified by their start date. Highly Qualified requirements include:
- Two years of study at an institution of higher education;
Minnesota's standard of a minimum of 60 semester credits or the amount required to complete two years of full‑time enrollment as determined by the institution attended. - An Associate’s (or higher) degree;
Minnesota's standard:
An AA, AS, AAS, or higher degree. - Received a passing score on the Para Pro, Para Educator, or Para Pathways Assessment (district will pay for the exam if not already obtained).
- Two years of study at an institution of higher education;
- Persons employed shall have the skills needed to perform tasks and work with children, staff and parents.
- Must have physical capability to lift and attend to the physical needs of students as required.
