Staff Nurse – Older Persons Care Unit (OPCU)

We are searching for enthusiastic and motivated staff nurses to join our Inpatient Services. We have individual specialised wards which provide care for patients over 65 years. Our dementia wards provide assessment and treatment for people of any age who have a Dementia diagnosis to enable a successful recovery back to the community or supported living environment. Currently we have opportunities to work in either of these specialised areas.

This is an exciting and challenging opportunity to work as part of a dynamic team within the acute care pathway. This role would be of significant interest to registered mental health nurses with a specific interest in physical and mental healthcare of older adults.

Please note applicants will be required to pay for their DBS check. Costs are deducted from salary following appointment. The cost of the DBS application is £26.40 (standard) or £54.40 (enhanced), this cost will be deducted from your salary over the first 2 months of employment.

You are encouraged to enrol for the DBS Update Service. An annual fee of £16 per year applies.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for registered Mental Health Nurses who are driven to provide high quality care to patients, and their families with either a dementia diagnosis. You will assume the role of named nurse to allocated patients and be a central point in advocating for the best interests and care needs of your patient. You will be approachable, compassionate and motivated with good communication skills and should excel at being part of a team.

The role will include working alongside an experienced nursing, medical, psychology and allied health professional team to provide an enhanced level of patient‑centred care aimed at supporting our patients in meeting their needs. You will become part of a supportive multi‑disciplinary team with focus on assessment of need, treatment and recovery, while placing the service user and their families at the centre of care planning.

You will have the opportunity to gain further training and experience working as a link nurse specialising in areas such as the Mental Health Act, physical health, and addiction.

Job responsibilities

There is lots of planned transformation in our Inpatient Services within the Older Person Care Unit (OPCU). This is a very exciting time to join our team and be a part of our service development within a ward management team role. The role is incredibly rewarding, supporting many of our patients in returning home to their lives in the community or into a Care Home environment.

We recognise our services as highly specialised, whereby our nurses can develop professionally within both mental and physical health. Our wards are supported by a range of Allied Health Professionals, who support and guide our team, enhancing our nursing skills to improve the lives of our patients and ultimately promote optimum recovery.

Applicants will:
  • Be a registered Mental Health Nurse with experience of working with this patient group.
  • Have excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Be able to problem solve and act as an able negotiator.
  • Have the ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Be reliable, motivated, and flexible with the desire to work with older adults.
  • Be an effective team player, able to work with a wide range of professionals as well as patients and their families.
  • Be hard‑working and able to maintain and contribute to a high standard of care.
  • Be able to work on a 24‑hr rota basis, including nights, weekends and bank holidays.

Applications nurses with specific interests or areas of expertise to expand current team knowledge and service provision to patients are encouraged.
