The Role

Join National Gas as our Lead Quantity Surveyor and play a pivotal role in delivering major Compressor projects that keep the nation’s energy flowing. This is your opportunity to lead, innovate, and make a real impact in a regulated, high‑profile environment. As Lead Quantity Surveyor, you’ll be at the heart of our commercial and contractual operations within the Compressor portfolio. Your expertise will drive the successful delivery of complex infrastructure projects, ensuring they meet business objectives, regulatory requirements, and deliver value for money.

You’ll lead a talented team, champion best practice, and foster collaborative relationships across the supply chain.

What you’ll be doing
  • Act as the subject matter expert for all commercial and contractual matters within the Compressor portfolio
  • Lead the development and implementation of contract governance, commercial procedures, and policies
  • Drive consistency and continuous improvement in contract administration and commercial controls
  • Manage commercial performance, contractor relationships, and a team of Quantity Surveyors and Assistant Quantity Surveyors
  • Oversee construction spend, risk exposure, and value engineering opportunities
  • Provide expert advice on NEC4 ECC contracts and dispute resolution
  • Collaborate with Legal, Procurement, and Project Delivery teams to ensure alignment and compliance
  • Lead cost planning, forecasting, and budget management across multiple projects
  • Prepare and review financial reports and commercial dashboards to support decision‑making
  • Promote a culture of learning, development, and technical excellence within your team
About You

You’re a confident communicator and a natural leader, able to build trust‑based relationships and drive collaborative behaviours. Your analytical mindset and proactive approach mean you thrive in complex, fast‑paced environments.

Key Requirements & Experience

Essential:

  • Degree qualified in Quantity Surveying (BSc)
  • Experience working with Main Works Contractors on large‑scale infrastructure projects
  • Strong working knowledge of NEC4 ECC contract Options A, C, and E
  • Proven ability to manage contracts
  • Ability to lead and develop a high‑performing commercial team
  • Specialist skills in commercial dispute resolution and contract administration
  • Excellent negotiation, analytical, and stakeholder engagement skills

Desirable:

  • Project Manager Accreditation highly desirable
  • Chartered Member of RICS (MRICS)
