Job Overview

Position:
Heavy Equipment Mechanic (Job ).

Location:

Mankato, MN.
Type:
Full‑Time, Day Shift, Monday–Friday.
Salary: $33.57–$38.98 per hour ($70,094–$81,390 annually).
Status:
Classified, Nonexempt.
Union: 202 – Craft, Maintenance, Labor/AFSCME.

Responsibilities
  • Analyze, diagnose, repair and maintain light, medium and heavy equipment.
  • Perform skilled welding, fabrication, and repair of parts.
  • Conduct preventative maintenance inspections on equipment.
  • Maintain records of time, materials, supplies, etc.
  • Use all required computer programs (e.g., TAMS).
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Class A CDL driver’s license with no air brake restriction and tanker endorsement within 6 months of hire.
  • Commercial Vehicle Inspectors Certificate within 6 months of hire.
  • Completion of a Heavy Equipment Apprenticeship program or graduation from a two‑year Heavy Equipment Mechanic or related training program that includes diagnosis and repair of engine, drive train, brakes, steering/suspension and hydraulics, training in electronics, and training in the use of computerized testing equipment and/or onboard computers.
  • Approximately 3 years of experience as a heavy equipment mechanic that includes diagnosis, repair, maintenance and modification of heavy‑duty diesel trucks and equipment and gasoline‑powered vehicles, use of electronics to make engine adjustments and diagnose problems, and use of computerized testing equipment and/or onboard computers.
  • Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the general public in‑person or via two‑way radio and other electronic devices; maintain routine written logs and simple records.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Valid Commercial Driver’s License, Class “A”, with no air brake restriction and tanker endorsement.
  • Valid Commercial Vehicle Inspectors Certificate.
Physical Requirements

Work in a set area with tool carts, sinks, hoists and supplies easily accessible. Frequent use of gross and fine dexterity in a variety of positions including reaching outward and overhead, bending, working with outstretched arms and/or while lying on the back. Climb up onto a large vehicle, work from heights and bend over. Use power tools, machinery, instruments and hand tools requiring frequent lifting and/or carrying of supplies and parts up to 50 pounds;

infrequently move between 50 and 70 pounds by pushing, pulling or lifting and carrying. Work conditions include vision, noise, vibration, respiratory and chemical hazards and occasional adverse weather conditions (heat, cold, snow, rain, wind). Must be able to communicate through writing, speaking and hearing. Communicate with the use of electronic communication equipment, telephones, two‑way radio, computer, etc. An individual with a disability may be qualified to perform the function if an accommodation would enable this person to perform the job in a different way, and the accommodation does not impose an undue hardship.

Requirements
  • Successful completion of past‑employer reference checks, criminal history check, SEMA4 records check, driver’s license check.
  • Pass a pre‑placement drug test for evidence of use of marijuana, cocaine, opiates, PCP and amphetamines (MDMA, MDA and MDEA) and acetyl morphine (6‑AM).
