This job is ON - SITE.

FTE: 0.500000

Shift: 1 (Monday - Friday, 1st shift. Flexibility with start and end of shift to meet business needs)

Job Summary:

To facilitate culturally and linguistically competent communication between individuals who are Deaf or hard of hearing and medical providers in a manner that promotes patient safety and confidentiality. Other duties as assigned.

Experience:
  • Minimum of 1 year experience in providing medical interpreting to Deaf and hard of hearing patients in a professional setting is required.
  • 3 years of directly related experience preferred.
  • Experience at a Level I Trauma Center is preferred.
Education:
  • Certification recognized by RID (Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf) is required.
  • A Bachelor Degree or equivalent experience is required for certification as an ASL interpreter.
Skills:
  • Bilingual in English and the language to be interpreted.
  • Solid knowledge of medical terminology and competence in communicating the meaning of terms.
  • Ability to interpret diagnostic processes, treatments, procedures, preventive care, and be culturally competent.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to interact with patients, families, and healthcare providers.
  • Ability to perform under stressful situations and medical emergencies.
  • Formal interpreter training preferred.
  • Proven medical interpreting experience preferred.
Licensure:
  • State of Wisconsin, Department of Safety and Professional Services license is required.
  • RID certification is required.
