Position: Senior / Principal Ecologist

Senior / Principal Ecologist – Arup

Join Arup’s northern office network (York, Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle, Glasgow  Edinburgh) on a permanent contract. Work alongside 45 experienced ecologists across projects ranging Gry Renewable Energy
, Water
, Transport and Data Centres
.

Responsibilities
  • Prepare clear, concise reports:
    Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (PEA), species survey reports, Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIA), Habitats Regulations Appraisals (HRA) and Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) assessments.
  • Lead projects that use nature‑based solutions to achieve biodiversity gain and climate resilience, advising on restoration, habitat redesign and green infrastructure integration.
  • Implement natural‑capital and environmental net‑gain strategies, including BNG, Building with Nature and other metrics.
  • Conduct field surveys:
    Phase 1 Habitat/UK Hab surveys (including condition scoring and invasive species monitoring) and protected species surveys (bats, otters, badgers) under licence agreements.
  • Mentor junior staff, fostering professional development and a collaborative team culture.
Qualifications
  • Minimum:
    Bachelor’s degree in Ecology, Zoology, Geography, Biology or equivalent.
  • Post‑graduate qualification (MSc in Ecological Consultancy or similar) advantageous.
  • Membership of CIEEM or equivalent professional body; progressing toward Chartered status encouraged.
  • Full driving licence.
  • Consulting industry experience with a broad range of ecological work; client‑facing exposure.
  • Proficiency in ArcGIS and other digital tools for efficient project delivery.
