General Description –

The University of Manchester invites applications for a fixed-term Research Associate position within its Biology, Medicine and Health division, based at the Manchester Cell-Matrix Centre under the supervision of Professor Tony Day. This role contributes to an innovative Wellcome Trust Discovery Award-funded project investigating the role of the murine Chitinase‑Like Protein (CLP), Ym1, in the regulation of collagen fibre formation, with implications for understanding mechanisms of tissue formation and repair.

The successful candidate will conduct experimental research in protein biochemistry and biophysics as part of a multidisciplinary team, engaging in laboratory work that supports project objectives and contributes to scholarly outputs, including peer‑reviewed publications and presentations. The position provides a supportive academic research environment with opportunities to collaborate across research groups and develop professional competencies.

Eligibility Criteria
  • A PhD (or equivalent qualification) in biochemistry, biophysics, molecular biology, or a closely related discipline.
  • Demonstrated expertise and experience in experimental research relevant to protein biochemistry/biophysics.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within an interdisciplinary research team.
Required Expertise/Skills
  • Strong protein biochemistry and biophysics skills, including practical experience in relevant laboratory techniques.
  • Experience with specialised methods such as turbidity assays, electron microscopy and analytical ultracentrifugation is essential.
  • Proven ability to generate, interpret and document high-quality experimental data, with potential to contribute to academic publications.
  • Effective communication and scientific writing skills appropriate for research reporting and dissemination.
Salary Details –

The salary range is £37,694 to £46,049 per annum
, dependent on relevant experience and in accordance with the University’s pay scales.
