About the Role

This role can be based from any of our UK locations London, Manchester, Edinburgh, Belfast, Cardiff or from Delhi (India) or Islamabad (Pakistan).

Role Context & Purpose

The role sits within the Research and Insight (R&I) function responsible for research excellence. The function supports the British Council to be an expert and inclusive organisation informed by research and evidence, and a confident and generous thought leader in its core areas of work. The postholder will support the team in designing and delivering research using quantitative methods, ensuring high quality and impact.

They will support the team in using quantitative research to inform strategy and planning, and in high impact narratives for external stakeholders.

They will have an understanding of research management processes and methodologies and will give advice across the British Council, contributing to building a culture of valuing research and policy insight. They will support the development and delivery of global programmes contributing to the British Council’s impact areas, undertake projects for the R&I management team, and support contracting and commissioning of new research and partnerships as required.

They will work with sector research leads and the Soft Power Insight function to establish good practice in quantitative research methods and ensure data quality and usefulness. This includes providing analysis of large and small data sets and giving guidance on validity and reliability.

They will work with the Evidence, Evaluation and Learning (EEL) team and the wider Data, Evidence and Performance team on joint projects to enhance capacity to evaluate programmes through monitoring data and operational research, addressing critical performance questions and improving understanding of performance challenges. The postholder will develop specialist expertise over time and support the Head of Research Excellence in promoting capacity in quantitative methods and data management.

The British Council’s Research and Insight function systematically generates useful new knowledge to achieve impact for our mission and for UK and overseas stakeholders. We aim to be evidence-guided, knowledgeable and insightful, a confident voice as a cultural relations thought leader and a generous sharer of knowledge. The team is based across the UK and South Asia with a community of practice of more than 200 members globally.

Core outcomes include:

  • Research to ensure the British Council is a trusted provider of knowledge and soft power insight in English, Education and Arts for UK and overseas stakeholders.
  • Well evidenced analysis of how our work generates soft power effects in priority countries.
  • We work with other knowledge-intensive functions and contribute to the organisation’s Strategy 2025 by enabling policymakers, researchers and practitioners to use our knowledge. We also enable colleagues to access current research and insight to support strategy and programming. We help evidence how our cultural relations work contributes to the UK’s soft power and long-term policy goals and to anticipate future global trends in soft power.
