Overview

Palatine Ambulatory Care and Withington Ward is a hybrid unit, which predominantly caters for Haematology‑Oncology as well as Teenage and Young Adult Oncology patients, receiving ambulatory systemic anti‑cancer treatment. The unit has a dual aspect comprising both outpatient ambulatory patients and state‑of‑the‑art four‑bed inpatient beds in collaboration between the haematology and transplant service and the teenage and young adult (TYA) service, providing high quality care for adult patients with haemato‑oncological malignancies and over‑16‑year‑old TYAs with all types of cancer.

We are a four‑bedded ward with specialist side rooms for isolating immune‑compromised patients. We give specialist chemotherapy, immunotherapy and cell therapy supported through training processes and clinical practice facilitators. We work in small teams to provide 24‑hour care, giving therapy, providing symptom control, treating sepsis and holistically caring for the individuals in our care.

Responsibilities
  • Administer multiple lines of oral and intravenous medication to immunocompromised patients.
  • Monitor vital signs and fluid balance.
  • Escalate concerns to senior nurses and the medical team and communicate with the wider multi‑disciplinary team.
  • Educate patients as they undertake ambulatory chemotherapy, enabling them to go home with chemotherapy and/or supportive treatments post‑chemotherapy, and develop an in‑depth understanding of all regimes and protocols.
Qualifications & Requirements
  • Post‑registration nursing experience.
  • Well‑developed communication skills, enthusiasm to learn, self‑motivation and excellent time‑management skills.
  • Organisational skills and ability to work in a small team with 24‑hour coverage.
  • Interest in haematology and caring for TYA patients.
Training

In‑house training is offered within a supernumerary period for all new starters. A team of clinical practice facilitators will work alongside new colleagues with peer support from a nursing mentor.
