Director of Engineering – Water

We are seeking a Director of Engineering to lead our Water team, managing client relationships, delivering high‑quality technical solutions, overseeing major projects, managing risk and implementing strategic growth initiatives while supporting and developing staff to reach their full potential.
Roleaccountabilities
- Promote continual improvement in SHE performance, including safe‑by‑design initiatives and personal targets.
- Build relationships with clients and partners to identify and realise business opportunities across all Service Lines and ensure Arcadis’ commercial objectives are met or exceeded.
- Provide technical leadership at a subject level and promote Arcadis technical excellence through strong regional networks.
- Evaluate the technical competence of senior staff and support their development, identifying and providing targeted training and mentoring.
- Lead the recruitment and development of water engineering teams, setting objectives and managing performance to ensure the team can achieve the business plan.
- Ensure complex technical projects are effectively led with good communication and collaboration between Arcadis and partner organisations, proactively resolving technical issues.
- Keep up to date with developments in the water sector (both technical and legislative), seeking opportunities to enhance Arcadis’ profile nationally (conferences, thought leadership, technical committees).
- Sponsor innovation initiatives that resolve complex client challenges and promote Arcadis leadership in this area.
- In conjunction with Business Directors, establish key performance targets and financial budgets for engineering teams to optimise business performance.
- Perform independent technical reviews for complex and major projects classified as high risk to Arcadis’ business.
- Encourage innovative and entrepreneurial thinking among team members, sponsoring service delivery CoPs.
- Promote and market all facets of the company’s services during client interfaces, providing direction and a leading contribution to complex technical aspects of bids, supporting the production of high‑quality winning pursuits.
- Demonstrable experience of applying independent judgement and responsibility in resolving complex technical challenges in a pressured environment.
- Experience establishing and developing high‑performing, multi‑disciplinary teams capable of delivering complex projects.
- Providing inspiring leadership to mixed teams from varied disciplines, backgrounds and cultures.
- Leading continuous improvement in safe‑by‑design, health, safety and welfare initiatives.
- Providing effective contributions, insight and active leadership in support of successful pursuits.
- A strong commitment to technical excellence and the professional standards demanded by your institution.
- Building credible relationships with senior leaders (internally and externally).
- Exhibiting the leadership qualities and behaviours sought in the Arcadis Global Leadership Model.
- A broad understanding of the regulated water and water management sectors, challenges and opportunities.
- Extensive knowledge of legislation, hazards and safe systems of work.
- Strong understanding of the principles of commercial management.
- Strong focus on health, safety and all dimensions of people welfare.
- Strong focus on designing and deploying effective project delivery processes.
- Holds a BSc/BEng or MSc/MEng or equivalent in a relevant discipline.
- Has achieved Chartered (or ideally Fellowship) professional status.
- Sound knowledge of the principles of sustainable design.
