Role Overview

Monday to Friday, 22:00-06:00, including bank holidays, 37.5 hours per week. The Domestic Services Team based at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust is looking for Domestic Assistants to be part of the relief pool working in all wards and departments across the Trust site, including Covid‑19 areas and other infection areas.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in maintaining a clean, hygienic and safe environment for patients and clinical staff, while assisting Nurses and other stakeholders such as Bed Managers with discharge/infection cleans as per local RAG poster, in line with the National Standards of Cleanliness.
  • Provide a rapid response service to a high standard of cleanliness to all wards and departments, under the supervision of the domestic supervisor.
  • Perform isolation room enhanced cleaning (Appendix

    A), general cleaning, high‑ and low‑level dusting, wet and dry mopping, and maintain all floor surfaces using equipment as required.
  • Clean and store equipment after use, remove clinical and general waste, and clean and descale toilets and sanitary areas.
  • Clean baths, taps, showers, and remove and clean bodily fluids in public areas.
  • Change curtains, replenish all disposables, hand towels, toilet rolls, soaps and gels, and clean and maintain domestic services equipment.
  • Adhere to cleaning policies, procedures, frequencies and the National Cleaning Standards (Appendix

    A).
  • Operate mechanical cleaning equipment, including scrubbing, buffing, vacuum cleaners and carpet shampoo equipment.
  • Check the health and safety of domestic equipment, report hazards to the domestic supervisor, and record all accidents and incidents.
  • Wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) and clean uniform at all times when on duty in accordance with Trust policy.
  • Respond to rectifications following audits within a given timescale and report signs of infestation to the Domestic Supervisor.
  • Demonstrate the Christie values and be accountable for own attitude and behaviour, providing support to new starters.
  • Liaise with ward and department staff to prioritise work areas and workloads, and communicate sensitively with patients and relatives.
  • Undertake trust corporate essential training (CET), departmental induction training (manual handling and working at heights), and ensure annual compliance with training requirements.
  • Work largely unsupervised on a daily basis but seek supervision when necessary; respond to ward/department activity and work schedules, planning and prioritising own workload.
  • Exert moderate physical effort for short periods, lift and push equipment, and perform frequent bending and stooping when cleaning equipment, fixtures and fittings, floors, and equipment.
  • Work at heights, act calmly and quickly in emergencies, and maintain concentrations during unpredictable work patterns and interruptions.
  • Use safety precautions when using cleaning equipment and materials, and comply with COSHH regulations.
  • Maintain the condition of domestic services equipment, report faults, perform stock control (soaps, gels, paper towels, mops, cloths etc.), and be ready to act in distressing or emotional circumstances when cleaning in patient areas.
Physical Demands & Working Conditions
  • Frequent moderate physical effort, lifting, pushing, carrying, bending, stooping, standing for long periods, and exposure to dirt, dust, bodily fluids and cleaning products.
  • Work in extreme cold or warm conditions, sometimes in a manual environment with unpredictable patterns.
Qualifications & Requirements
  • Reliability, enthusiasm, and flexibility, with experience in cleaning preferred.
  • Basic information technology (IT) knowledge, ability to log on to a computer and enter passwords to access Trust information systems.
  • Knowledge of trust policy and procedures; basic understanding of National Cleaning Standards and Infection Control procedures.
  • Willingness to undertake additional training and to comply with COSHH regulations.
