Legal Costs Draftsperson - HDR Paying Party

The Law Costs Draftsperson is responsible for resolving costs claims predominantly as a paying party representative acting for a variety of professional clients within the Housing Disrepair sector. Key aspects of the role include reviewing formal and informally served Bills and Schedules of Costs served by the Claimant Solicitors, with a view to then providing appropriate legal advice and recommended settlement parameters to existing social landlords Solicitor and Local Authority clients.

Key Responsibilities

  • To assume responsibility for own case load of both litigated and pre-litigated costs matters relating to both housing disrepair and landlord possession claims,
  • Handling day to day file management of own case load from inception up to and including any subsequently required assessment process, predominantly involving cases falling within the Provisional Assessment process,
  • Ability to analytically review both formally served Bills and informal pre-litigation schedules of costs.
  • To prepare written Points of Dispute and to consider any subsequently served Points of Reply.
  • To provide strategic costs advice and preparing cost strategy reports.
  • Undertaking periodic reviews of files in line with client requirements.
  • Provide written updates by email or letter to clients detailing case activity to ensure that they receive up to date and accurate information about progress when requested.

Skills, Knowledge & Expertise

  • 6 months and legal costs experience in a similar Costs Draftsperson role - considering and advising upon Bills of Costs for the paying party.
  • Have a good understanding of the Detailed and Provisional Assessment process, case law, and associated processes.
  • Willingness to learn and develop skills in other areas of costs, where required.
