The Role

The purpose of this role is to promote a sensitive, responsive and caring approach to all patients, visitors and colleagues within the hospital environment. To be responsible for the delivery of high quality, safe and effective patient care throughout the patients’ visit to Optegra. To work in a manner that also ensures maximum efficiency, effective utilisation of resources and the seamless delivery of support to Consultants / Surgeons.

The ideal post holder will provide excellent care to all patients, with specific responsibility for providing skilled clinical and technical assistance as a member of team, and also may include peri-operative and post-operative care in the surgical and refractive suite of the hospital.

Key responsibilities
  • Carries out a full range of registered health care professional duties, including assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of the patient’s condition and care. Maintains the privacy and dignity of all patients whilst adhering to Trust and department policies, reporting any difficulties with these duties to Clinic Manager and/or AHOCS
  • Work with the multi-disciplinary team supporting them and delivering excellent care to patients during their clinical pathway.
  • Ensure all documentation for traceability is effectively completed.
  • Anticipate the needs of the surgical team, by provision or appropriate surgical instrumentation and equipment.
  • Take responsibility to ensure all surgical equipment is disposed of correctly including ensuring appropriate decontamination and sterilisation of reusable equipment is carried out and can be evidenced.
  • Having an awareness of the patient specific requirements for each case including lenses or other bespoke items and to the need to ensure the Clinic Manager and/or AHOCS is aware of any issues.
  • Use clinical judgement and analytical skills to pro-actively identify potential problems during the patients’ clinical pathway that require Consultant / Surgeon input.
  • Administer drugs and treatments as prescribed in line with Optegra Medicines Management Policy
Requirements
  • Registered General Nurse or Operating Department Practitioner
  • Current NMC/ODP registration with no restrictions
  • Qualification in Ophthalmology or Peri operative care
  • One year or more ophthalmology surgical theatre experience
  • Computer and IT skills i.e. good working knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Awareness of responsibilities in relation to NMC Professional Code of Conduct
  • Awareness of CQC standards and requirements
