Band 2:
Weekdays £12.51/hr, Saturdays £17.64/hr & Sundays/Bank Holidays £22.90/hr
About the Role
As a General Facilities Assistant, you’ll contribute to the smooth day-to-day running of the hospital by supporting a variety of non-clinical functions. This is a vital frontline role supporting the safe, clean, and efficient running of the hospital, directly contributing to patient care and staff wellbeing.
The role is multi-skilled and varied, covering a range of facilities services including domestic cleaning, housekeeping, catering support, portering, stores, laundry, and waste management. You will work as part of a flexible team, ensuring high standards are maintained across all hospital areas.
Key Responsibilities
Depending on service needs, duties may include:
Domestic Cleaning & Housekeeping
Cleaning and maintaining wards, clinical areas, offices, corridors, toilets, and public areas
Following infection prevention and control procedures at all times
Replenishing consumables such as soap, paper towels, and hand gel
Supporting ward housekeeping duties, including patient areas and equipment cleaning
Catering Assistant Duties
Serving meals to patients and staff in a safe and courteous manner
Cleaning catering equipment and maintaining food hygiene standards
Following allergen, food safety, and health & safety guidelines
Hospital Porter Duties
Transporting patients safely and respectfully between wards and departments
Moving equipment, beds, medical notes, and supplies as required
Supporting departments with ad-hoc logistical tasks
Stores Assistant Duties
Receiving, checking, and distributing deliveries
Stock control and replenishment of supplies to wards and departments
Manual handling of goods in line with training and safety guidance
Laundry Services
Handling, sorting, and distributing hospital linen and uniforms
Operating laundry equipment where required
Ensuring correct procedures for clean and soiled linen
Waste Management
Collection and segregation of clinical, domestic, recyclable, and confidential waste
Ensuring waste is handled and disposed of safely and in line with regulations
Cleaning and maintaining waste areas and equipment
General Duties
Adhering to all health & safety, infection control, and Trust policies
Working flexibly across departments and shifts, including weekends and bank holidays
Providing a courteous, helpful service to patients, visitors, and staff
Person Specification
Essential:
* Ability to work as part of a team and independently
* Good communication skills and a positive, professional attitude
* Willingness to undertake a variety of facilities duties
* Understanding of the importance of cleanliness, safety, and confidentiality
* Physically able to carry out manual tasks (with training provided)
Desirable:
* Previous experience in cleaning, catering, portering, laundry, stores, or facilities work
* Experience working in a healthcare or similar environment
* Basic knowledge of infection control or food hygiene (training will be provided)
