We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Band 8a Blood Transfusion Departmental Manager to join the Blood Transfusion Laboratory at The Christie Pathology Partnership on a 12‑month fixed‑term contract (maternity cover).

The Christie is the largest single site cancer centre in Europe and the first UK centre to be accredited as a comprehensive cancer centre; with more than 60,000 patients treated a year. The Blood Transfusion Laboratory issues approximately 1,000 red cell units and 400 platelets per month. It is equipped with 2 x Biorad IH500 analysers, a Contronics alarm system and a Technidata LIMS.
The repertoire includes automated group and screen, manual cross‑matching, electronic issue and antibody investigation.
Main duties of the job include:
- Ensuring a high quality of analysis agreed with quality standards of service delivery and key performance indicators.
- Providing expert technical and operational knowledge to the laboratory service.
- Being responsible for specialist training delivery to Biomedical Scientists, Healthcare Support Workers and other Healthcare Professionals, and providing expert technical advice in all areas of responsibility.
- Ensuring all areas comply with relevant legislation, UKAS requirements and the recommendations of the Royal College of Pathologists and similar professional organisations.
- Providing professional leadership to Biomedical Scientist Team Managers, Specialist Biomedical Scientists, trainee BMS and Pathology Support staff.
Qualifications and experience:
- HCPC State Registration as a Biomedical Scientist, with evidence of Continued Professional Development.
- One of the following: IBMS Higher Specialist Diploma in Transfusion Science; IBMS accredited MSc with a Transfusion/Transplantation specialist of at least 45 Level 7 CATS points; MSc in another Biomedical Science discipline in conjunction with an IBMS Higher Specialist Diploma in Transfusion Science; evidence of Masters level learning equivalent to 180 Level 7 CATS points with at least 45 CATS points in Transfusion Science;
Fellowship of the Institute of Biomedical Science (FIBMS) by examination; substantial post‑senior level experience working in a blood transfusion laboratory;
Management Qualification to ILM level 3 or relevant experience. - High level working knowledge of biomedical techniques and practices at post‑honours degree level; expert interpretive and diagnostic skills; knowledge of national guidelines and protocols; high accuracy and numeracy; good knowledge of computer applications and LIMS; excellent problem‑solving skills; leadership qualities; knowledge of Major Incident Plan.
Experience:
- Advanced working knowledge of Haematology/Biochemistry techniques and practices post MSc level.
- Excellent problem‑solving skills.
- Highly developed leadership qualities.
Salary: £55,690 to £62,682 a year plus £1,500 wellbeing allowance.
Contract:
Fixed term, 12 months, full‑time.
