Background
The Faculty of Science and Engineering at the University of Manchester has been investing in Early Career Researchers for many years, increasing the diversity of our staff. These represent a strategic investment in outstanding researchers who will shape our future research portfolio. In 2026, we plan to appoint Dame Kathleen Ollerenshaw University Research Fellowships across the Faculty. These fellowships are fixed term for 5 years and are an excellent stepping‑stone to establishing an independent research career and gaining a full‑time permanent academic position.
We are looking for outstanding candidates who have the ability to undertake world leading research in some of the following areas:
The Dalton Nuclear Institute brings together the skills and expertise of the nuclear research community at The University of Manchester, the most advanced nuclear research capability in UK academia. We encourage applications in areas which are aligned with priority research topics identified by the Institute. There is particular interest in developing research in the following areas:
- Sustainable Uranium production and processing
- Community regeneration and social value associated with nuclear projects
- Digital Technologies for Nuclear Safety and Regulation
- Critical isotope/materials recovery and recycling
- Future energy systems integrating nuclear with renewable technologies
As well as the specific areas of science and engineering detailed above, the University of Manchester and Dalton Nuclear Institute have a strong desire to develop further capability in:
- Nuclear generated heat, storage and distribution networks
- Nuclear data
- Fission and fusion fuels
- Metallurgy, and materials performance and manufacture, for the nuclear sector
